Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What do you make for dinner?

This is a follow-up to my Toddler Dinners poll.

I voted that my toddler eats a separate meal most nights but occasionally eats what we eat. It's almost alien to me to have her eat what we eat every night, for two reasons: 1) she eats two hours earlier than we do, and 2) we eat such boring, healthy foods for dinner -- often grilled chicken or fish and steamed vegetables -- which are usually too plain for her.

I'm hoping to get a better idea of what other toddlers are eating for dinner. So, if your toddler often or always eats what you eat, what are some of your typical meals?

Re: What do you make for dinner?

  • Well, my DS is a very picky eater, so I would love to be able to say that he eats what we eat, but it's not so.  I usually try to give him a little of what we are eating to see if he will like it and it's usually a no.  So, what I do most nights cook him his own meal, which is any of the following:  tortellini and meatballs, mac and cheese, bagel bites, oatmeal with fruit, yogurt, mini bagels, fruit (loves fruit, so blueberries, strawberries, bananas, pears, peaches, prunes, etc.), beef noodle soup, veggie bites and chicken nuggets.  DS doesn't like vegetables by themselves, so this is an on-going challenge for me.

  • Let me see, we have...

Lasagna, keilbasa, pierogies, bbq chicken, pot roast, beef stroganoff, cassarole dishes, chinese, pizza and probably a lot more that I can't think of but DD is not a picky eater, she will try anything.

  • I could have typed this post exactly. DH and I eat chicken or fish almost every night and steamed veggies. I struggle sometimes with what to feed DH. I have resorted back to buying gerber meals. Not the most cost effective way to feed him but he gets more variety then what I was doing.

  • chicken pot pie, shepherds pie (they have the vegetables and a sauce that he'll eat) need to watch sodium though, avocado and kiwi blended, mac and cheese with pureed broccoli and carrots, rice and lentils, barley soup, meatballs.

My son is very picky he won't eat dry and cold foods, everything needs to have moisture and be warm....

  • It sounds to me like what you're eating would be perfect for your DD! It's well balanced and healthy. Will she really not eat steamed veggies and a protein?

DD almost always eats what we eat. If there's something that isn't ideal for her diet, I'll come up with something easy for her like an English muffin pizza or something along those lines.

  • My son isnt picky at all, he will eat anything. Things we eat are, spaghetti, goulash, chili, beef stew, steak, mashed potatos, veggies, chicken alfreado, tacos, enchiladas, burgers.....thats all I can think of right now.
  • White chicken chili, kneophlia soup, potato soup & sandwiches, meatloaf & veggies, lasagna, lasagna soup, veggie soup, chicken & sweet potatoes.

It is winter and has been freezing for months!  I do a lot of soups!!!  I give Taylor the chunks from the soups.

Oh, she eats balanced and healthy meals, but I usually need to jazz them up for her. She won't eat more than a few bites of plain grilled chicken or roasted turkey, but she loves it mixed into cheesy mashed potatoes -- which isn't something I would make for me and DH. She does love my homemade baked chicken tenders, and I make them full-sized for me and DH, so that's one of the few meals that we can all eat. She loves tofu and eggs too.

As for vegetables, she loves peas, but she has to be in the mood for everything else. Some nights she gobbles up her broccoli, but other nights, she wants nothing to do with it. lol.

  • I'm kind of surprised that you think your dinners are too plain for her.

Last night, for instance, we had pork that I had coated in bread crumbs/parmesan cheese and browned in olive oil in the skillet then baked.  We also had baked potatoes, corn and peas.  DD loved it.

We eat a lot of stir-fry.  She loves chicken marinated in italian dressing and will eat an entire breast.  We also fix fajitas often.  I give her everything we eat but I just don't put it together.

  • We try to have Harmon eat what we are b/c I don't want to start a life long process of being a short order cook.

When he doesn't I make him some Rice w/veggies, or spaghetti.

  • DS eats what we eat for dinner at least four nights a week.  We eat things like stir fry chicken with veggies, baked chicken with rice, ham steaks with corn and potatoes, quesadillas, and/or pasta.  We almost never eat red meat, so I really need to find some recipes that I can add to the rotation.

This is what we do. He's a not a huge fan of veggies, but meeeh. We also give him pasta, I just made biscuits the other night and he loved them. Stuff like that.

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • Pasta, steak and potatoes, pizza, salads, thai food, mexican food, pork chops cooked in stewed tomatoes and string beans served over rice, pork chops with a port reduction served over mashed potatoes with steamed veggies, seared ahi with salad and rice(nuked until completely cooked for DS) Sushi (DS gets an avocado roll, and I learned that one on the bump).  Literally he eats what we eat or some close kid friendly version of what we are eating.  HTH
  • DD isn't a picky eater so she generally eats what we eat, or if it something she can't have I will do either a gerber meal, pasta and veggies, chicken sticks, potatoes, or something for her.

But some ideas of what she eats that we eat: mac n cheese, chicken, turkey burgers, hamburger, veggies, mashed potatoes, soups, eggs, etc.  Oh and she loves toast!
