2nd Trimester

How much time will you DH have off with you and baby?

Originally I thought my DH was going to be able to be off for my entire maternity leave. I was really excited we'd be able to have that time together.

He works in freelance tv production so he works on one show and when it wraps he moves on to the next. We thought his show would be wrapping in June and he was going to take the rest of the year off to be with me and the baby, when I have to go back to work.

Today he just got offered a new show that is too good to pass up. It will be good for him and for us. I'm excited for him, but now it only looks like he'll have a week when the baby is born. That's life I guess. I know it's a great job so I think he should take it.

  • My DH will be off for two weeks.
  • Loading the player...
  • My husband gets 10 days but he doens't get paid during those days. But he is still taking the days.

  • Paid - he has to us vaca time and only gets two weeks a year so we will use one week when the baby is born and another week down the road. Otherwise he doesn't get paid if he takes time off, so we aren't sure how much more we can afford for him to take since my work is similar and I will be using all of my sick/vaca time and get about half a paycheck while I am out. If only we both could still get paid it would be so much easier!
  • My DH is taking 1 week vacation after the baby. Then he'll take a day here and there throughout the summer. Plus, 1 week in late July.

That stinks he can't be there your whole leave, but that's good he can at least take 1 week.

  • My DH is an electrician, so if you don't work, you don't get paid. He'll maybe take a week off. Probably just a few days, and then I'll be on my own. That's the way it goes. I feel blessed to be able to take 3 months off. :)

  • He's planning on at least 6 weeks, but has been banking time so if he wants to take more time. I'll be taking 12 weeks so he might take off a few days before I go back to work.

  • under fmla my dh can take up to 6 weeks using his vacation, personal & sick leave for pay. He is taking 3 weeks right away and then we are driving to Wisconsin to have dd baptized over labor day weekend and he's taking another week then.
  • DH is taking 4 weeks paid.
  • My DH is a teacher. Since I'm due on July 4, we'll have the rest of the summer (through labor day) together.  He's a football coach though so a lot of August will be camps/2 a days.  Since I'm off work until January 1, I can still spend time with him and stop by practices to walk the track with baby.
  • Just a few days..my DH is a contractor/carpenter so summer is his busiest time.   He won't get paid for his time off, so probably just 3 or 4 days until I get out of the hospital.  I am home for 13 weeks paid though, so at least I will be home for a while.

  • Its hard to say for sure. DH is a nurse so he can't just not go in people need him. He has booked vacation for the week I am due. Every 4 days of workign consecutively he gets 5 days off, so by takign 4 vacation days he gets 2 weeks off. If I deliver early or late he will try to switch things around at work. It looks like at least 2 weeks, but like i said I will have him home for 5 days after every 4 & luckily my mom plans on takign time off after he goes back to work to come & help.

  • Congrats on your DH's offer!

DH will be taking 6 weeks off... He runs a FedEx terminal along with 2 others and they had no problem with him getting the time off (AND PAID! Thank GOd!).

  • DH will take the month of August off with me Smile
  • My DH will probably take two weeks off.?
  • DH will be taking one week personal leave (paid). He could take more than that, but it would cut into his 3 weeks vacation for the year and he wants to save those days for emergencies and holidays.

I think one week is a good amount of time.

  • My DH is only taking 1 week off after Sam is born.  He is a grad student, and we hope he'll finish his PhD and defend it within 8-10 weeks after the birth.  So when he goes back to work, my mom will come stay with us for 2 weeks to be continued help for me as we get on a routine and get used to things.
  • my DH owns his own companies, so he will actually get better leave than me!  he'll get 12 weeks paid leave, possibly longer if i have to come back to work - he's the boss, so he gets to make up the rules of his companies!!
  • I get 12 weeks- he gets 5 freaking days! I'm a little bitter about that one, but it makes me all the more thankful that my mom is flying in to be with us. I'm not sure I could swing it alone after just one week!
  • we own our own business so dh can leave work if need be but he usually comes home by 2 or 3 anyways.  i'm definitely grateful for that!
  • my dh will take a week depending on when i go into labor and then work only 3 days during the following week.  he's a bartender though- he doesn't get paid leave.
  • Two weeks, i think.

We got lucky.  his vacation re-ups in August, so he gets 3 weeks vacation time then.  We're thinking he'll take the two weeks, and have a week left over for odds and ends.

  • DH is a lawyer, so he doesn't have vacation time per se, as long as he bills the hours they don't really care.  He'll probably take a week off at some point.  My mom will spend a week helping out, most likely as soon as the baby comes.  DH will wait until all the visitors are gone to take his week so that there aren't too many people just milling around at the same time.

  • DH is planning to take 3-5 days off and I'm getting the whole summer off as I'm a teacher and due in June.....
  • The timing of my pregnancy was very fortuitous. I'll be off the entire months of July, August and September. My husband is a teacher so he'll happen to be off this summer, too. So, he'll be home for the entire month of July. Then in August he'll be home part days because he's a football coach and they start practice then. I'm a little nervous about it. I'm glad he'll be around to help me out w/ the baby and our daughter, but I'm sure we'll start to annoy each other.

If it wasn't summer he'd probably only take off a week.

  • It looks like a week or less. His company has less than the 50+ employees for the Family Leave Act to allow him the up to 4 months off in CA. I have been telling DH that they need to hire at least 30 people till June and then let them all go when he comes back. I know its evil but I want him to enjoy the baby too. Also I was thinking we would take a mini Vacation at the same time.

  • My dh stayed out a week w/me after my ds was born. It was really helpful. That was my second c-section.
  • My DH owns his own real estate company, so he plans on having another agent take his clients out for a couple weeks after baby is born.  I'm sure he'll end up taking calls and working a bit here and there, but for the most part he'll be off.
  • My boyfriend has 8 weeks paid paternity leave at his job which is great. I?m glad he?ll be there for the first two months

  • Probably one week, maybe 2 if we can work it out with his co-workers schedules.
  • Only one week.  Bc the economy sucks and DHs work is really slow he hasnt been working that much.  So every once in a while he will throw in a vacation day on a day off so we get some kind of money.  So by the time baby comes he will have about a wk vaca.  But he will probably still be slow and get to spend some time with me on days off.  But we are praying that, that won't happen bc we will need the money!
  • With DD, DH had 2 weeks. Now, I'll be lucky if he gets even a week off. Crying
  • He gets two weeks of "paternity" leave.  Technically it's "non-primary caregiving parental leave" or something along those lines, but his firm refers to it colloquially as "paternity leave".

We are very happy about this.  I know that most daddies get jack for paid leave, and have to use PTO or take it as unpaid.  When he told his boss we were expecting, the first thing he said was "Lucky!  When my kids were born I had to take vacation to spend time with my wife & baby... you get the two weeks paternity leave, that's awesome!"

After that, he has to use vacation time if needed.  Depending on how I am doing, I may ask him to take a week of vacation so he's with us for three weeks, but I think 2 weeks should be fine.  He can always work from home if needed, if he doesn't have consultants in (though working from home isn't necessarily very helpful).

  • We own our own business so, as of right now, DH has said that he is going to absorb his personal crew into another crew a few weeks before EDD so that he doesn't have any jobs scheduled for himself. He'll still probably have to go out and do proposals, and check up on jobs but he'll only be gone for an hour or two at a time instead of being gone all day.

Fingers crossed that he stays to that plan.

  • Since FI won't be paid for his time off, he's only going to miss work while I'm in the hospital. He'll probably go back to work the day after the baby and I come home. I'm okay with that though. I'll have other people around if I need anything.
  • Well DH was just laid off so hopefully he will have a new job by than.  Although with him being at a company for such a short period of time I highly doubt he will be able to get time off.  =/
  • My DH is a youth pastor so he can usually work from home so he will stay home for 2 weeks.

  • DH's company gives 8wks paternity leave at different pay (100% for 2wks, 80% for 2wks, etc).  Thankfully, he doesn't have to use up sick/vacation time.

He's never taken the full 8wks.  Depends on my delivery....I guess if I have a c-section this time, he'll take more since that's major surgery.  He took 2wks with the other 2.  By then, I was ready to have him out of my face and get back to "normal"!

  • DH works in the golf business so in Wisconsin that means summers.  He may take only 2-3 days with me but our families live really close by so we should be fine.
  • I doubt he'll take off more than a few days--a week max.  It's his paid vacation time & we'd rather he use it when we were going somewhere.  Honestly at this point (kid #3) I don't really need nor want him here...I've got it covered especially since I nurse. :o)  He took off more w/ #1, about a week for #2.

  • Nothing.  His boss messed up and overscheduled both of them the whole month of July.  He has one day off a week before I am due and we are thinking of asking to be induced on that day just so I know he is there for the birth.  I'm not a fan of induction but after DS, I was told I could not go past my due date again (I was a week late).
