1st Trimester

So I told my grandparents last night...

My mom's parents are cool - they were so happy and excited for us and were thrilld to hear Ellie "talking" to them over the phone. My other grandma, on the other hand... Her comments to me: "Well, you just lost all the weight [from your first pregnancy]. Why are you going to just mess that up again? And won't Ellie be too close in age to the next one?" This coming from a woman whose own kids (my dad and my aunt) are 20 months apart, and Ellie and the next baby will be 19 months apart. Thanks, Grandma. I love you too...

Re: So I told my grandparents last night...

  • Wow, that was pretty rude.  Sorry you had to go through that... hopefully she was just having a bad day and will apologize soon!

  • Nope - she means well, but her mouth doesn't always connect with her brain. Something about that "filter" being turned off...almost all the time.  Just reminds me of when I had bad acne as a middle school kid. She would always ask me if I was washing my face and using rubbing alcohol on it to clear up all the zits. (Yeah, Grandma, I never wash my face.) She has also made comments about how chunky Ellie is. C'mon! She's a baby! I'd much rather have a fat baby than a skinny one. :)  This is why I'm glad she lives in Florida half of the year.

  • Don't you love grandma's reactions?  When I told mine the first time I was pregnant, there was silence.  Then an appalled, "Oh, Jessica!"  Seriously, I was married and 23 years old.  My mom and all her sisters got pregnant before they were even finished with High School.
  • I know exactly what you mean with grandmothers not having their filters turned on. It seems like the older they get the worse it gets. When I told my grandmother that I was pregnant her response was "just know that things can happen". Great thanks for making me think about all of the things that could go wrong instead of sharing my excitement with me.  I don't think she meant to come off that way though either. She seems excited now so maybe your's will come around.

  • That sucks, but sometimes old people are just like that. I am speaking from experience...my grandmother was always so down on everything right up to the end. It happens. I'm sure she's happy but I swear it's a grandma thing to find something wrong in everything.
