Bad Reaction to MMR Vaccine (but okay now)

Some of you may have seen my post about my ds being sick for a week...he struggled with a high fever for about 4 days and then he broke out with what looks like the measles from head to toe! He would cry when he'd fall (he's still a wobbly walker but doesn't normally cry when he falls) and his lymph glands are swollen. He's so pitiful right now. :( The dr said a couple more days until he's better.

p.s. a follow-up to the gray lip thing as well, the dr checked that out and apparently what I think is gray isn't actually gray - my ds has veins along his nose and above his lips that show through and when he's cold they become very visible. According to the dr this is what I?m seeing. I still am switching pedis so I will get a second opinion.

Re: Bad Reaction to MMR Vaccine (but okay now)

  • I'm sorry he had a bad reaction :o(  Still very important to get that vaccine though.  My FIL had polio as a child & has been disabled his entire life because of it, so I have seen the firsthand importance of getting all of those vaccines!  I hope your DS gets better very soon.

Yes, I agree.  I would take this over the real measles, mumps or rubella.

  • That was DS's exact reaction to the MMR.  No one had every heard of the measles-like breakout -- and it freaked me out a first.  DS was out of daycare for a week.  Sorry it's happening to your son -- hope he feels better soon!

I thought we were in the clear I didn't realize it would have happend 10-14 days after the vaccine (I guess I should have read the pamphlet closer)

  • My daughter had the same thing happen along with a sudden cough and runny nose that correlates with measles. Apparently this happens with 5% of children. Go figure. It took 2-3 weeks for her personality to return to normal and the spots to go away. She still has the cough 4 weeks later.

We are going through the same thing right now- my DD has had a fever for the last 4 nights- we went to the pedi today and they swear up and down it's a cold and not a reaction to the vax.  She hasn't been eating much- thank g0d I am still nursing because it's all she wants at this point.  Also same thing w/ the walking and falling down.  I feel so bad for her- I hope your son feels better soon!

Sound just like Roseola more then a reaction to the shot. It's probably just a coincidence that it happened soon after the shot. DS had it  and it caused a sudden high fever for 3 days followed buy a measles like or prickly heat like rash lasting 3 days.

that's what the doctor thought at first - but in his opinion the rash was more consistant with a MMR reaction versus a Roseola rash. Both reactions are very similar but due to the timeline they felt it was more likely to be a MMR reaction.
