Nightmares/Night terrors

For the 2 weeks, Waylon has been screaming in the middle of the night (usually between 2-4am).  He isn't completely awake.  He just screams and cries until DH gets him.  DH will bring him to bed and he'll go back to sleep.  The second he lays him down he starts fussing again until picked up.  But like I said, he's not completely awake.  DH mentioned this to his specialist today and it was suggested that it could be nightmares or night terrors.

I did some research and it's got me worried.  It happens every night, whereas from what I've read, it should only happen a few nights a week.  Has anyone delt with this before?   Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

  • maybe gas pains or teething?  it sounds to me like something hurts
  • This happens with DS. It just started about a month ago and he'll wake us up out of a sound sleep screaming and we go running thinking something is wrong, but his eyes are closed.

In our case, it has only happened a few times a week so we have come to the conclusion that it is night terrors/nightmares and DH and I are racking our brain trying to think about what babies would have nightmares about (milk shortage, lovey attacks, etc.). We laugh during the day about it, but it is pretty scary. I feel so bad for him and pick him up to hug him before I put him back down and he seems so scared.

I guess I can't really help anymore than that, but maybe it helps to know that it isn't just your little guy.

  • I agree with the PP that it does seem like something hurts, but it could even be an emotional/insecurity thing. ?I know when I was on bedrest, my 16 month old (who was always the BEST sleeper) suddenly wasn't sleeping through the night and got to the point where she refused to even get into her crib at all. ?It was definitely her way of expressing that the changes in the house were affecting her. ?I'm not saying that is what is definitely going on with your son, but it's worth thinking about. ?GL!?

  • Is he just starting to walk?  It is very common for babies to have episodes like that when they are near a developmental milestone - their brain is so busy working everything out it interferes with his sleep.  Other than that maybe molars or an ear infection?
