TTC after 35

After my 6 months visit

I feel a bit better now that I've seen the doctor. He wants DH to have a semen analysis done. I can't wait to break that news to the husband. Ha! I am having some bloodwork done to check my progesterone on CD 21. He looked at my charts and wanted to look into that, which made me feel better. Then we will do an HSG and possibly a low dose of Clomid. The doctor said the first step usually is the charting, so he made copies of my charts and did look at them for quite a while. It made me feel tons better!

I called my cousin after my appointment because I knew she'd had fertility issues. It turns out she had really low progesterone and needed shots. She also had the HSG done and took Clomid. She has twins, too (which freaks me out a bit when thinking about myself and Clomid). The doctor also gave me some of my antidepressants which I have been off of for six months. I really am glad to have them back because TTC when you're not getting pregnant is hard, but without my medicine it seems so much harder!

My only worry is about telling DH that I need him to do a SA. I am scared that he'll balk about it, or be resistant. I should have stopped by the lab and picked up the stuff today since we haven't had sex in a while. I'm sure he'd be able to get it done really quickly right now. Hee hee!

Thanks so much for listening and for all of your feeback before. It really is helpful to have others who've been there give advice, etc. I feel so much better knowing that I wasn't overreacting and freaking out over nothing.

Re: After my 6 months visit

  • It sounds like everything went well and you are feeling better about being proactive.  It is nice that your doc wants to see your charts as I have heard that some docs don't believe that charting is important or helpful.  By the way, I looked at your chart and we are on the exact same cycle day and have really similar cycles.  We can get each other through the 2ww.  Let's hope we can get BFP's together this cycle!!

  • Hey there,

I don't have any particular feedback, but am always happy to listen :) I read your post on here the other day too, so you must be delighted to have gotten an appointment right away and get stuff rolling!

Lastly....am glad to hear you feel better!

My hubby is doing the SA next week. . He will do it at home and I will drop the sample. I thought he would be resitent but wasn't! He just didn't want to do it at a lab!!  It is difficult taking the first step. I look at it as one step closer to our utlimate goal hopefully! Good luck to you!

  • Glad you feel better. DH is supposed to get a SA too but we made a deal that he wouldn't get it until after this cycle if I don't get KU. He is trying to figure out how he can do it at home and drop off. Our instruction sheet said not to have waited more than a week, so make sure he has fresh ones to drop off!
  • my DH had no problem with doing the SA at the office and it didn't seem to bother him after it was done...the funny thing is that while we were waiting for the "wash" to be done another guy came out with the same goofy grin as my DH had and I couldn't help but smile! he would so kill me if he knew I just told you guys that! haha!  the things we share!!

anyway they say no less than 36 hrs and no more than 5 days since last makes the best specimen.

  • BTW...good luck!!!

  • I think my DH must be the only guy on earth who was totally laid back about the SA! ?Guys are so funny!

Glad you're feeling better, Lizzy. ?It is scary, but you'll feel so much better with a plan. ?Good luck to you!?

  • I'm so happy to read your post and see that they are taking action.  As I mentioned before, I'm going for my first Dr. visit on Monday after 6 months of trying so you've given me an idea of what to expect. We can go through this process together. Will you have the HSG before you O this month?

I informed DH a while back that I would be seeing a dr if I wasn't pg in 6 months and told him what they would require from him. He was like, OK, why do you think that would be a big deal. He has son so I know that in his mind he isn't worried, no matter that I tell him things can change in 10 years. We live about 5 minutes from the clinic so he will probably be able to do it at home.

I'm really anxious and excited about seeing the RE but really, really nervous about the CD3 b/w results. I'm so afraid they'll tell me my eggs are done.

Anyway, good luck I hope your DH is a very willing participant.

  • My husband has an SA done I was worried about telling him thinking he would be like 'uhh no' but he actually was fine with it.  Hopefully, your husband will be too.

Maybe point out to your husband, if he gives you a hard time, that of all the poking and proding you have to go through he at least gets a 'happy ending' at the end of his test.

Some advice, My husband and I had not had sex for 3 weeks before his SA was done. The test results came back okay -not great but very doable for getting pregnant.  After the results I was reading a pamphlet and it said to not go longer than I think 3 days without having sex because it can show low morphology or motility (I can't remember which one) when he might actually be fine.

Good luck, I'm glad your Dr has a plan for you.

  • This is what I found on line, I was a little off:

    How To Prepare

You may be asked to avoid any sexual activity that results in ejaculation for 2 to 5 days before a semen analysis. This helps ensure that your sperm count will be at its highest, and it improves the reliability of the test. If possible, do not avoid sexual activity for more than 1 to 2 weeks before this test, because a long period of sexual inactivity can result in less active sperm.

You may be asked to avoid drinking alcohol for a few days before the test.

Be sure to tell your health professional about any medications or herbal supplements you are taking.

  • Thanks so much everyone! It's kind of nice to know that I might be going through these steps with other people. I just wish that none of us needed to!

DH was actually very good about talking about the SA. He got home late last night, so we didn't have tons of time for a really detailed talk. I am calling the clinic today to see if I can just pick up the kit or what. I will have 2 hours to get his sample to them, so we'll probably do it at home. I'm going to talk to him about doing it when he's ready (this month, though). And he can't do it around O time!

I am doing my HSG after the bloodwork, so I won't be doing it before I ovulate this month.I figure this month we'll see if DH's guys are good and check my progesterone after ovulation. Next month we'll see if my tubes and uterus are good, and anything else that needs to be done. Hopefully, we'll find out something and be able to go from there!

  • My DH was not crazy about the SA but with a little loving push from me, he finally did it. You shouldn't approach it like maybe he has a problem, just explain all the tests you have to take and after all that, I bet he'll be relieved that he only has to shoot in a cup. *sigh* men have it sooo easy. GL!

  • Lizzy-

I just saw the RE for the first time in Feb.  Had my 21 DPO B/W and SH had SA.  I'm scheduled for a follow up with the dr. on Monday and my HSG is on Tue. Assuming DH's SA was ok, she's going to start me on a low dose of Clomid. Goold luck!
