Do most babies actually fit into newborn size clothes?

I was registering this weekend and was trying to load up on onesies, but the newborn sizes looked so tiny it just doesn't seem like they would last that long. I know my brother never even wore them. What do you ladies think? Should I just get a few NB size and a bunch of 0-3 or even amounts of each?

  • I believe newborn fits up to 9 pounds. SO, they can grow out of them very quickly. I plan on getting only a few NB and the rest 0-3.

  • DD was 7lbs 5oz and she swam in the newborn onesies but she grew into and out of them very quickly.
  • My SIL just had a baby a month ago and this past weekend she told me not to bother getting many newborn clothes.  He now weighs 11lbs (was 8lb something at birth) and she said the outfit that he was wearing that day was a 3 month size.  I will be taking her advice most likely!  Just get minimal newborn sizes.
  • They grow out of them quickly if they fit them at all. I would get a LOT more 0-3 than NB.
  • NB fits 5-8 lbs in most standard sizing.  We aren't registering for or buying any of this size, though some people are giving us outfits this size.  I was born over this size, as was DH, and given that our little squirt is measuring large at every appointment, I don't expect him to fit into them either (though I do pray for a healthy 7-8 lber instead of him being much bigger!)
  • I got a few NB clothes for DS,but mostly 0-3.  Even as a newborn I would usually put him in 0-3 sleepers.  So they were a little big, but he grew into them quickly.
And for this baby I have picked up on only 1 NB outfit, and the rest 0-3.  I got the one in NB b/c it actually looked a little big for NB.

You never know though.  If you have a large baby they may skip NB all together or if your baby comes early they may wear NB for a while.

  • My DS was 7.2 at birth and had to wear mostly preemies for a  couple weeks. 0-3 will last longer..might just be a little baggy at first!
  • Yes, but only for a short period of time. I would recommend looking at clothes that are 0-3 months.
  • I'd lean towards 0-3 over NB, unless you think baby is going to be extremely small at birth.

  • DD was 6lbs when was born. I had to get her some preemie onesies because the NB was so big. Also, be careful of the maker. Gerber tend to run on the small side.

  • My daughter was in the until 3 months, but there are babies that never do fit. It really depends on the child.
  • I wasn't going to get any newborn clothes until I had a better idea of his size closer to my EDD. So far I've only bought 3 months and up.

  • recommend buying 0-3 months.  You'd rather it be too big than be too small.

  • OK, well DH is not a small guy and I was 8 something at birth, so I think I'll just get 1 or 2 packs of the NB size and change the rest to 0-3. If they're a little big that's better than being too small to use.

  • My sister's first was 5 days late and NB clothes were swallowing him up. He was in preemie clothes for almost 2 weeks. So it probably just depends on your baby. He was 6 lbs 4 oz.
  • My daughter wore newborn size for a month! And when she was first born, they were big on her. She was 6lbs, 11oz.

  • YES! ?DS wore newborn for the first several weeks. ?and everyone had me so convinced that i was going to have this HUGE baby so i didn't even bring anything newborn to the hospital. ?he was 7.10 and 7.1 when we left. ?he was in newborn diapers (also something i didn't buy) and newborn clothes or 0-3 mo. clothes for awhile. ?

bring newborn size clothes to the hospital!?

  • DS weighed 8lbs at birth and wore newborn clothes for the first month.  In fact, he wore a premie outfit at his church dedication at 9 days old!!
