We first started using the Nuby sippy with a soft spout. DS resisted all others at first. We have 2 of them and now he likes the Playtex ones. They have a hard plastic spout. We have 2 of those and some other random cups. Gerber has some good ones too.
Paige liked NO sippy cup! I can't even imagine how much I spent finding the "perfect" cup - at least $40! My friend gave her a tumbler cup from tupperware and she LOVED it! I found some cheaper ones from First Years. That is all we use. They are not spill proof but I still love them! And what is great is now that she is 18 months she is used to a REAL cup so when I am sitting close we take off the lid and she is drinking like a big girl :-)
I love the Born Free sippy cups. The soft spouts help with the bottle-cup transition (i think). And, i discovered that you can buy just the spouts and handles to turn the born free bottles into sippy cups. Love that!!!
We have tried nearly a dozen sippies and I've FINALLY had really good success with Gerber Sip & Smile cups. DS uses them very well; he prefers the softer spout sippies.
DS loves the Nuby Sport (soft spout). He no longer uses bottles because of this cup. I highly recommend it. They sell it at Walmart for under $3.00.
DS liked these too but I quickly got him away from them. They are so much like bottles it seemed to me that they defeated the purpose of sippies. I think they are a good transition cup though!

Julia would only use Avent at first (I think she liked the handles.) She can now use pretty much any cup, and since I found that the Avents leaked sometimes, we switched to Playtex Insulators.
DS also likes the Nuby ones with the soft spout. We have some with handles and then last week at target I found some slim ones with no handles and he loves those ones.

DITTO!
Starter sippy - Nuby with the silicone spout. A great first sippy cup.
Once she got the hang of it we switched to the Avent soft spout. It was really good too, but leaked.
We just now switched to the Playtex Insulator. LOVE it. But it's a little more advanced.
Start with the Nuby.
