NE1 Dc walk the stairs by themselves?

Re: NE1 Dc walk the stairs by themselves?

  • Paige can go up and down stairs by herself but I have taught her to use her hands and then slide down on her tummy.  She could probably hold on to the banister and come down but I am just not that brave yet!

  • when did you start teaching? We're about to move and probaly into another 2 story but i'm SO nervous b/c this house & the new one BOTH have tile at the landing, yikes!! I feel like putting a pillow at the bottom LOL!!
  • He has been going up like a champ for months, but he tries to dive down head first. I don't see down happening anytime soon.
  • He just started going up them one day, much to my surprise... I'm nervous about him going down, though.  Our house is really old and our steps are incredibly steep.
  • We don't have stairs, but we went over to a friend's house who does have stairs, it was the first time he been in a house with stairs and he just climed on up with no problem and no assistance from anyone.   I helped him down.
  • I would say Paige learned this (much to my surprise on her own) around 11 month or a year.  One day the gate was left open and she just started going up.  Coming down is something that we had to teach her.  And because she learned how to come down the stairs on her belly she now knows when she is sitting on the couch to flip over on her belly and slide down.  I know I shouldn't but I no longer worry about her being on the couch.  I am just waiting for the day she forgets and falls off Embarrassed

  • My DS could walk the stairs confidently by 18 months, but not until he was 3 years old did I let him go up & down completely by himself.
  • DS just mastered coming down the stairs on his tummy. He still takes one stair at a time when going up. His legs are too short to do it while standing. We only let him do the stairs while being supervised.

  • She started crawling up the stairs at 9 months. I think she was showing signs of the movements by climbing up on things and she took to the steps like a champ. As far as going down the steps, she can go up and down, one step. But then she tries to turn around and go backwards....not good.
  • Ben can walk up the stairs by himself.  Obviously, we are always right behind him.  He just sort of figured it out one day.  We haven't let him try and go down yet...and won't for some time.  We have hardwood steps and at least 12-14 of them (I've never counted).  This makes me extremely nervous.  So, we keep him away from them.
  • Yes.  DD can crawl up them or use the spindles on the banister for support.  Going down, she either holds our hand, uses the spindles or shimmies down on her butt.  Either way, we are either right beside her holding a hand or right behind her in case of emergency.  She's not allowed on any stairs by herself.

  • Mason has been able to crawl up the stairs for several months, but I always stand right behind him.  He sometimes stops and turns around and nearly falls.  I haven't tried to teach him to go down yet.

  • Caleb climbs the stairs by himself with one of us following behind.  He has done this since 10 months.  We haven't taught him how to come down yet.  We still carry him.  If you hold his hand he can step with his feet onto each step.  His legs are pretty short though so it is a little hard for him.
  • Zane started climbing the stairs around 11 mos. We have 13 steps. We don't let him do it unsupervised. He is less skilled at coming down.
  • ok cool thanks for the suggestions & info. I think we may just start teaching him today :)  The other day he held my hand and tried to go up on the left side of me (but not holding w/ left hand) to anythign and it was kinda tough. He was hoofing by the time we got to the top :)
  • I may be the only one here, but DD is a champ at going up and down our stairs. She is very cautious and it took a long time before she was comfortable going up the stairs, and then she just took off. DH took a weekend and taught her how to go down safely (i.e. not headfirst, turn herself around and go down one at a time).?

We have an oddly shaped set of stairs and we can only gate partly up, above our two landings. So we concentrated on stair-proofing DD, b/c there are five (carpeted) steps up to the first landing. She goes up and down them by herself all the time, plays on the landings, takes toys up and down, and is super confident. If I forget to put up the gate, she has been known to go all the way upstairs, play with her books, then come back down to play with other toys. I try not to let that happen, b/c I prefer to be there with her when she tackles the whole staircase, but the reality is that the only (3) times she's fallen have been when she's distracted by DH or me. ?

I think she has been focusing on learning the stairs rather than walking. :)?
