sahm-whatcha doin?

My LO is sleeping, but lately i feel like I am at a loss for fun things to do with him being trapped inside. Too cold out...ugh. We have mommy and me today (thank goodness) but I feel guilty that I'm not entertaining or stimulating enough 24/7. A little independent play is good right?

Re: sahm-whatcha doin?

  • My little guy is really good at playing independently.  I get down on the floor and I try to play with him, but he just crawls off and goes to play with another toy.  :(

  • DS is sleeping right now and I'm online trying to find different activities to go to. I'm sick of being cooped up inside too--I can't wait for spring/summer!

Now that DS is one I have found a ton of activites to do with him! Our local Children's museum had Toddler Tuesdays--each Tuesday is either music, art or science classes. Then our school district's Parents as Teachers has a toddler gym for free, plus weekly storytime. They also have swim classes I just signed him up for! I'm really excited because he doesn't really get to interact with kids since he's not in daycare.

  • I should have said that I am also looking forward to spring/summer so we can play outside more!  I have found out that the library in a neighboring town has toddler activities in the afternoon, plus there are museums and the aquarium that I would like to take him to as well.

That being said, I hate being cooped up.  However, DS was not always the best sleeper (just started getting better about a week or 2 ago), so I don't want to mess with his nap routine.  He is still napping twice a day, so we don't have much time in between naps to go out and do stuff.  I realize that this will change, so I'm hanging in there.

  • I'm nesting but then we're headed upstairs he's going to help me clean out the closet for a MASSIVE garage sale we're having next month to move! Seroiusly...he loves putting clothes in baskets & unload, then reload..etc and repeat! he's a great helper :)
  • We just got home from a playdate, but I totally understand what you mean!  I am also trying to save $$, so a lot of the activities that I have found are sort of out.  I try to save my running around to days when we have nothing.  It keeps us busy.

Independent play is fantastic, but sometimes their attention spans are rather short, so she gets bored easily!

Today it's beautiful out, so we're going for a walk.

  • I just got finished feeding DS lunch. Yes, a little independent play is good.  A fellow SAHM friend of mine recommended finger painting with pudding and food coloring as another activity---this way if they eat it, it's ok.

Here's also a toddler website someone on this board recommended for additional activities: https://www.preschoolexpress.com/

  • DD is napping right now too...

I need to get out of the house every single day or I'd go crazy! ;) Besides playgroups (I joined Mother's and More ~ National group w/ local chapters) and fieldtrips through my mother's group, we do story time at the library, they also have music classes there, Gymboree, ..

We go shopping, the library also has a great play area, sometimes we go to Petsmart to look at the fish/birds/cats (DD LOVES the fish!!).. Now that DD is getting older, I bring her to local Kiddie Klub type places where they have the climbing toys and stuff for them to play on.. Friends take their kids to local museums and science centers and I've heard they have great kid areas in there.

At home, I try to separate our day in activities, like they would at a preschool.. so we have our regular eating times, independent play, reading time, we've started coloring lately and DD loves that, we have active play time where I play with her on the floor, and also where we play a little more "rough", like kicking a ball around or playing chase in the house, etc.. That plus our daily outings and our day is packed. Then while I'm cooking dinner, DD gets 20 minutes of the Wiggles (TV) and then we eat dinner and DH is home and it's his time w/ DD, shortly followed by her bath and bed :)
