Soy formula users...

Did your pedi recommend that you offer soy milk or whole milk at age 1?  Our pedi told us to give soy milk even though DS has had dairy products (cheese, yobaby yogurt, etc.) and has not had a reaction.  I gave him the soy today and he loved it, but just wanted to see what others were doing.

Re: Soy formula users...

  • We went straight to milk with no problems. ?I was really nerves, since she had a sensitive tummy as an infant. ?She couldn't have any formulas and didn't like any of the hypoallergenic formulas. So I bf until she was 9 mos. and then got the okay to try soy formula. ?Once she turned one year we went straight to milk. Did he have sensitive tummy as an infant?? I wonder why pedi said to go to soy milk over regular milk??

  • No, he really didn't.  When he was six weeks old he started having tummy issues and a rash on his face from the formula. We switched to soy and all the problems were gone.  I asked the doctor why not whole milk and when should I try it?  And he said not to try it.  He said he would rather not have me rushing him to the ER b/c of anapheletic (sp?) shock. But, I honestly didn't think his allergy was that bad and I remember the doctor telling me that he would probably outgrow it at a year.

  • He would have to have a pretty serious allergic condition to go into shock after drinking milk, and obviously he doesn't since he's been eating yogurt and cheese.  I'm actually surprised you were even on soy formula to start with, most pedis recommend that as a last resort.  Regardless, I think if he's been eating yogurt and cheese ok, I'd try regular milk.  He may not even have milk allergy, just lactose intolerance.  If it were me, I'd start with milk and if  you notice any reactions, either go to soy or try lactose-free milk.  DS is on lactose free milk and doing well.

  • Mrs.Mikey- that was my thought too...I should clarify that Soy was the fifth formula we tried, so it was a last resort.  But, I was surprised he told me to do soy milk.  I asked him for how long and he said until he went to college!

  • Um, that does sound a little extreme.  Even if he did have a milk allergy, most of the time kids outgrow it.  I say if you're comfortable trying regular milk then go ahead, and just watch closely for any reactions.

  • Get some Benadryl to keep on hand just in case.  Zachary is allergic to milk.  If he has a reaction the allergist said to give him 1 tsp Benadryl and if his lips or tounge swell or he has trouble breathing, call 911.  If there is a reaction without breathing problems, you can just give the Benadryl and call the doctor.
