Nipple Rings

My FI and I are planning on TTC in Sep.and we would like to BF.  I have had my nipples pierced for close to 8 years now. Does anyone have any recommendations on when to take them out for successful BF results? I know there is a chance that the scar tissue will prove too thick for BF to even occur. Has anyone had any experience with this? TIA!

Re: Nipple Rings

  • I can't answer your question specifically- but the milk comes out through multiple holes- it's not just one hole- it's more like a shower head, so I would think that unless the scar tissue blocked the entire nipple you would be OK...

  • I took mine out a year or so before ttc.  You can still tell where it was pierced.  Milk comes out of the two spots just a little bit more than everywhere else.  I think I remember reading you can keep it in as long as you are comfortable but never ever nurse with your jewelry in.
  • A friend of mine had her nipples pierced and when she nursed her LO the milk came out to fast for him. She stopped nursing. Talk with your doctor and see what they say.

I think it depends a lot on the LO to be, how they handle the milk flow.

  • I had mine out for about a year also, but the holes are still there.  Those areas were more prone to leakage but that's about it.  I didn't have any issues with flow or scar tissue at all.
