Pumping question

I noticed in the post below that some of you get 5-6oz or more per breast when pumping. ?Is it weird that I only get 1.5 or 2 oz per breast? ?Sometimes I only get about an ounce. ?I have a Medela Pump in Style Advanced Pump, so I don't think it's a pump quality thing. ?Is there a way I can increase my output? ?I've only been pumping for a couple weeks (usually twice a day) - is this something that will improve with time.

E.g. - I pump in the a.m. after his feeding (usually just one breast - the one he doesn't take) and once in the evening (in place of a "regular" feeding). ?Last night I got 2.5 oz TOTAL (1oz on left, 1.5 on right). ?This morning I got 2.5 oz from my right (he ate on the left side). Thoughts?

Re: Pumping question

  • I had the same problem and started taking Fenugreek to increase my milk supply. I still don't get 5-6 oz per breast though.

  • I was only getting about 1oz per breast at first.  I decided to take one Saturday and pump every 2 hours.  This made my supply increase to about 4-5 oz per breast and it's still going strong.  Sometimes I get 6 oz per breast, sometimes only 3.

  • If you're pumping while nursing full time what you are getting is very normal.  I think most people that get larger amounts are talking about pumping when they are away from their DC.  If I pump after a feeding I get about what you describe (1-3 oz).  At work I can pump 6-9oz every 3 hours or so.

Kellymom.com has a good article on this subject: https://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/pumping_decrease.html

I've also found that consistency is key.  When I pump everyday after a certain feeding the amount I get increases.  If I skip a day it goes back down again.  Basically you're trying to get your body to know you need more milk at a certain time (just as if your baby was actually eating more at that time).
