Waking a sleeping baby

DD will sleep a four hour stretch at night (AMAZING!).  I have been just letting her wake me up when she wants to eat.  DH thinks I'm starving her by not waking her up at night to eat.  Opinions?

Re: Waking a sleeping baby

  • Is she above birth weight? If so, leave her. Your DH will realize down the line how precious those 4 beautiful hours are... She will let you know when she's hungry.

  • She'll wake up when she's hungry. I never woke DS.

  • At that age I was waking DD every 2 hours to eat during the day and every 3 hours at night.

  • Noooo don't wake her at night....she'll let you know when she's hungry.  During the day, try to not let her sleep more than 2-3 hours max, so she knows the difference between day and night....at night, let her go as long as she can/will/wants!

    ditto this

  • I NEVER woke her.  She hit her birth weight right away and was sleeping through the night at Christmas (so at 8 weeks) now she sleeps 12 hours every night.

She will wake if she is hungry.  As long as she has hit her birth weight don't worry!

We go to the pedi Thursday to check her weight.  So I guess I should feed her every 2 hours at night until she hits birthweight, and then it's fine to let her sleep until she wakes up to eat.

    Thanks, girls!

  • My DD never woke us to feed her - we definitely had to wake her up.  Plus she had jaundice, so we were more diligent about feeding her to flush the bilirubin out and so we wouldn't have to supplement with formula.

You can probably wait 3hrs at night, if you're going to wake her until you know her weight. Better to go longer stretches so she learns the diff between night and day.

  • I would only wake after 4 hours at night or 3 hours during the day until she hits her birth weight.  I never nursed as often as every 2 hours and my son was still back to birth weight by two weeks.
  • After DS hit birthweight, I didn't wake him.  However, he was a very hungry guy, and wanted to eat every 1.5-2 hours 24 hours a day, so I didn't get the chance to worry about it.  Most of the first month is a blur...
