to take him to ped or not?

Help please! I had to pick DS up from day care yesterday with a 102 fever and can't take him back today. His only symptoms are the fever on and off (goes down after meds) and a runny nose. The problem is that it seems like every time he gets a fever he gets an ear infection. Usually he doesn't sleep or is very irritable but he seems fine. I made an appt yesterday just b/c it's so hard to get in for today. So, should I go even though it could just be a cold and have ears checked to be on the safe side or cancel appt. Normally I wouldn't question myself but my husband seems to think he doesn't need to go since he's playing fine and now I'm confused. TIA!

  • I would call them and see if they want to see him. Could it be teeth?

  • I usually try to stay away from the Drs office, but if you're home, and you have an appointment, I'd go.  You'd hate to cancel the appointment and have him get super fussy tonight (Murphy's Law right?)....especially if it's hard to get in.
  • I would call them and ask if they think they need to see him or not.
  • I guess I'm in the minority here....I would take him in. This same thing happens with us and DS had a fever last week and a cold all week. I thought he was getting better, so I never took him in and lo and behold.....last night we slept for TWO hours :(:( I'm pretty sure its an ear infection.....so DH is taking him to the pedi today.

If he consistently gets ear infections from colds, I would take him in......better to catch it earlier than later.....

  • I was wondering if it was teeth but he just got his 1st molars in unless another one is coming already! And normally he doesn't get the fever when teething. I don't know, I just know I've been taking quite a few days off with him..he's healthy for two weeks and then sick, it's a never ending cycle. I think I'm going to keep the appt for now. Here's to hoping for spring/summer soon!
  • my ds had similar symptoms since thursday so I took him in yesterday and everything is perfect other than he has a virus. My ds isn't prone to ear infections though - so I'm not sure. I know ear infections come after the sickness so it may be premature to start any antibiotics. Follow your mom-gut - if you go today it may be too soon. I'd discuss your concerns with the nurse and see what they recommend.
