Almost 1...Starting Whole Milk Questions

We are in the process of changing pediatricians and the boys will not be able to get in for their well baby visit (12 month) until April most likely.  I was wondering how the rest of you are going to handle the weaning of bottles/formula and the intro of whole milk.  I could probably call and talk to a ped, but thought I would get some ideas/advice here too.

Re: Almost 1...Starting Whole Milk Questions

  • with DS my pedi just had me start adding more milk to his formula slowly each day... for DS it was more of an issue with temperature than with the actual "milk" - b/c he was so used to room temp formula... so we had to zap the milk for about 10 seconds in the microwave to take the chill off.

once we were on all milk we slowly started to cut back on how long it was in the microwave- until it was not at all and he just got it cold.

our pedi had us start with whole milk for 2 weeks until he was uesd to it- then move to 2% milk b/c DS has always been a good eater (and a little chunk) so he said he did not need the added fat.

  • I just switched mine over last week. They usually do 8 oz bottles, so I did 4 oz formula, 4 oz whole milk.  Like pp said, it was more of a temp issue than a taste issue.  I would also give them whole milk in their sippy cups to practice with.  We just finished the last can of formula today and they are drinking milk-only bottles with no problem

  • Meanest old mommy ever here. We put it in a sippy and said, "Have a drink." No warming. No milk in bottles either. They drink about three sippies a day now- but it took a little while to get them up that high.

And uh... weaning off bottles. Well, I'll let you know when the girls turn 29 and finally give them up! We are only giving one bed time bottle a day, but I forsee this last one being the worst.

  • The day after their birthday, I made each bottle with 1 oz of milk and the rest formula. The next day, it was 2oz of milk and the rest formula.  The day after 3oz of milk.   You see the pattern, this continued until they were on all milk.

  • We just introduced milk over the weekend.  We've given them sippy cups with straight up milk in it, but temp has been an issue for us, too (I'm so glad to see others have had the same experience!).  I still had some formula left over so we've also been making them bottles w/3oz formula, 3oz milk and trying to slowly make them less & less warm.  They still do 4 bottles of milk (our pedi told us to limit the milk to 16 - 24 oz and then add in other liquids like water or juice -- which we also have to warm up a bit thankyouverymuch).

My two are getting shipped off to the grandparents houses for almost a week starting on Friday, so I'm not going all balls-to-the-wall with the whole sippy/milk thing until they get back, b/c I figure they are going to be spoiled hot messes when they return anyway.  :)

    Good luck!

  • Our pedi advised going 'cold turkey' so that's what we did.  I did it at about 11 1/2 months (was running out of formula).  Just gave them a bottle of milk to begin with.  At the beginning I was giving one morning bottle of milk and one bedtime bottle, and sippys in between.  Now they are on sippys only.  They did fine with the transition...I guess we were lucky.
  • Hey chica!

We've just started putting a milk/formula mixture into their sippy cups for one feeding a day and will up the amount of milk until it is all milk and then move on to the rest of the feedings...they're little piggies and don't seem to mind one bit the temp or the milk.  And we're doing 2% as well because pedi recommended it because my IL have high cholesterol and diabetes in their family.
