Making butternut squash for baby - is this ok?

Can I rub it with a little bit of olive oil before I put it in the oven to roast?  Super Baby Food says I can rub it with butter, but DD has a dairy allergy.  I used olive oil on her cradle cap when she was much smaller, and she had no problem with it on her skin.  Do you think this is ok?  Also, the squash is organic but the olive oil isn't - will I be negating the "organic" if I add non-O EVOO? (silly, I know, but just wondering if anyone knows how much pesticide olives absorb & how much would get into the oil)

  • i think it would be fine. i do not know about pesticides and olives, but if you are worried, you can steam the squash. i did this the other day and it worked well.

  • I'm not sure about the pesticides in non-organic olive oil either, but when we made squash for DS, we just roasted it in the oven without any butter or olive oil and it turned out great.

  • I am not sure about pesticides and olive oil, but I made DD a butternut squash yesterday, and all I did was poke holes in it with a fork and roasted in the oven for an hour, turning once.  Then I pureed the flesh.  Since I roasted it whole no oil or butter was needed.
  • I don't think olive oil would hurt anything, but I think it's a lot easier to just bake it in the oven plain. I just cut one in half lengthwise, scoop out the seeds and bake them flesh side down in about an inch of water for an hour at 400 degrees. I let it cool for about an hour, then scoop out the flesh and mash.

Ditto, that's how I cook it.

  • Why not just bake/steam it as is.  I usually cut mine in half and place it meat-side down in a casserole dish with about 1/4-1/2 inch of water for 30 minutes-ish.  Then I scrape out the flesh and mash it with a potato masher/fork (DS doesn't need purees anymore).
