I haven't really paid much attention to the price of bottles until yesterday, and I was shocked! The Avent bottles I planned on getting are $18.99 for 2 4oz bottles. How many bottles do I really need? And do you prefer a specific brand?
We had a ton of bottles but we didn't get them all at once. As for brands, it was a trial and error thing for us. We ended up liking Dr.Brown's because they helped with DS's reflux. Given their cost, I would not buy that many before the baby is born since you don't *really* know how much you will like them and more importantly how much your baby will like them. We bought at least 3 brands before we loved one.
Eventually, we switched to the Playtex drop ins which were sooo nice.
First time mom here, but just from being with friends w/kids I can tell you the more, the better, unless you want to be washing/sterilizing a lot. I prefer the playtex with the drop in liners myself, but really only because all my friends have used them, and those are the kids I have had experience with, so those are the ones I've used. You may even want to get a few of each kind until you see what you like. Worst case scenario, have 1-2 of a few different kinds, once you find what you like after a week or so, send DH out on a bottle run.

I would just start out with the Avent Infant Starter pack & then if you need more buy them but you may not. ?I believe I started with that and then had maybe bought another pack of 2. The Avent bottles do leak at times if the cap is not on properly but I still love them. ?Just check the bottle before giving it to your little one. ?I usually would turn the bottle over so that you could see the milk come out of the nipple & then turn it right way & you can tell right away if its going to leak, if it does you just need to redo the cap.
We had to try several different types of bottles before we found one DD really liked. She had bad reflux, so we ended up using Dr. Brown's. I didn't have many before she came home anyway because my plan was to breastfeed (it didn't work and I pumped for 6 months instead). How many you need depends on a few things. First, do you plan to BF and only occasionally use a bottle or do you plan to formula feed, in which case you'll need more bottles. Also, how often do you want to wash them? We ended up having 9 (since they were sold in 3-packs) and even though we usually only used 4-5 a day, it was nice to have extras for the nights she was really cranky and I couldn't get them washed (we have no d/w, hand-washing took a long time). If you have a d/w you can rinse them then put them in the d/w and wait until you're running it anyway, so you may need more or less bottles depending on how often you run your d/w.
