So my BGs and FBs have the dreaded ammonia smell and I think I need to strip them. Should I also do my prefolds and covers? I've never noticed the ammonia smell on them.
I'm so annoyed - first the PUL is cracking on all my BGs and FBs and now I have to strip!
Re: Stripping question - ammonia smell
I didn't do the PFs or covers. Be careful not to use too much Dawn -- I did "a couple of squirts" like people recommended and even after 5 or 6 rinses (after the regular 2), there were still some suds.
We have never had a problem with the PUL cracking -- I can't imagine why that is happening. I am starting to think that the standard old prefolds are the way to go for most days -- easy to care for, easy to use, easy to fold, cheap, and generally hassle free.
I would just do what stinks - which is probably just microfiber and maybe hemp if you have any.
Instead of doing extra rinses, do extra hot washes (or, if you have the option on your machine, extra hot rinses). Hot water removes detergent better than cold.
I can't believe your pul is cracking, that's very strange. Have you called them to see if they'll replace it? Do you usually dry your shells in the dryer or hang them dry?
