2nd Trimester

Weight gain...

Good morning!  Anyone out there have any advise on exercising besides walking?  I went to the doctors last week and this is my second month with an 8 pound weight gain...  OUCH!  I've gained 24 pounds and I'm at 24 weeks... My doctor is not impressed.  She told me to cut out sweets and junk food, however I didn't feel that I was really eating a lot to begin with.  But, I do need to cut out the sugar in my daily decaf coffees...  I think that is where a lot of it is coming from.

 I was 128 pounds pre-pregnancy and am now 152.

Anyways, just wanted to see what others have done for exercise besides walking that has worked for them.  I hate working out and never really did pre-pregnancy.  But, I need to start now for the health of myself and my baby girl.

Thanks!!!

Re: Weight gain...

  • Well what about swimming or some kind of group exercise classes?!  I get bored with walking on the treadmill so I mix in some classes.  That seems to work for me.  However I wear a heart rate monitor just to make sure it doesn't get up to high.

I guess my best advice is to mix it up so you don't get bored.

     GL to you!!

  • There are quite a few dvd's out there. I have the denise austin one right now, it's pretty easy but it gets you moving. There is a cardio section and a toning section. I just ordered another one from amazon that should be here in a few days. I can't remember what it's called but there are three different sections with different types of workouts.?

I know a lot of people do pilates or yoga too. ?

  • Well, I have been walking/jogging, using the treadclimber and elliptical. I use Wii Fit at home and a few workout videos. As for a pregnancy one, I have Fit Mama with Leisa Hart which has a salsa workout, yoga and some labor/delivery prep stuff, stretching, etc.

Since you don't like exercising, are there any prenatal exercise classes that you can get into? It's very motivating to be in a class with real people!

Also, if you have Fit TV there are some good shows on there if you don't have a gym membership.

Really- it just occurred to me that walking might be really good for you if you haven't exercised at all. What's wrong with it?

  • I have a prenatal yoga dvd that I do when I find myself wanting to eat when I'm bored. it's about an hour, keeps me occupied and out of the fridge!
  • Walking has actually been my primary source of exercise and it seems to be keeping things in check for me. I do a tae bo workout DVD on bad-weather days when I can't get outside.

  • I have gained 21 lbs at 22 weeks.  I started off around the same size as you- 132 lbs and 5'7".  I think if you start out smaller you gain more sometimes (??).  I, like you, don't eat a lot of sweets and never have any beverages with calories.  I've been walking....I think riding the reclined bike at the gym might work??  If you're eating healthy and working out, you should take it as a sign that your body wants/needs you to gain some weight.  I know a lot of friends who started off very small and posted HUGE gains during their pregnancies despite eating well and excercising.  All of them dropped the weight right after the baby with hardly any work.
  • I go to the gym with FI and hang out on the ellipticals and listen to my ipod, makes the time go by faster. I go to a stair climber or a bike if I need to change it up.

  • I'm in the same boat exactly.  However, my doctors have described my weight gain as "fine" and "looks good".

An elliptical is pretty low impact.  I have a few prenatal exercise videos  - "Complete Pregnancy Fitness" is one.  What did your doctor say about starting an exercise program in 2nd tri?  You might get better results with diet.  Then again, what do I know if I'm in the same situation Stick out tongue

  • I am almost in the same boat as you, but my doc said everything is fine.  She said that you tend to gain the most between 5-7 months and don't gain as much at the end even though that's when baby grows the most.  we'll see!!
  • My doctor was much nicer this time about the 8 pound jump then her nurse was last month.  She pretty much said to walk as she knows that I'm not a big work-out type of gal.  I'm sure she doesn't want me doing too much for a change in exercise.  Don't get me wrong, it's not like I sit on the couch and eat potato chips all day or anything, but I've been able to maintain a great weight for my size (5' 2" and around 120-125 pounds) without having to do much.

I know that the last trimester is when most people gain the most weight in their pregnancy and I don't want to do any harm to the baby.  I know that I just need to suck it up and walk and take things in moderation.

I would listen to what your doctor is telling you.  If your doc think that your weight is fine, then great!  Also, them knowing that you are doing something for exercise probably means a lot!

Thanks for your words of encouragement.  Now I know I'm not the only one out there in this situation!

FYI - My doctor defiantly stressed to me that I can't loose any weight... Just to watch my weight from here on out.

  • As far as your weight gain goes, I really wouldn't be too concerned. With DD I was at the same point that you are and by the end of my pregnancy I had gained over 40 lbs. My Dr. always said that my weight gain was perfectly normal and after DD was born I shed the weight very quickly.
  • Thanks for the advise.  There's nothing wrong with walking... just looking for other suggestions.  But, it really is probably the best option for me right now.  It's all for a great cause!

    Thanks again...

  • I love walking.  But I try and do it with other people or hikes etc.  I'm also starting a prenatal yoga class tomorrow morning!  It will be in a class setting so I think it will keep me motivated to attend.  I would also like to find a water aerobics type of prenatal class to do once a week.  I'm super super paranoid about my weight gain this time around so I have to be super vigilant.
