NBR: knitting... is it hard?

I am NOT crafty in any way. But I am unemployed and SO BORED. I thought I could start knitting my little guy some hats or boots or something. I can crochet, is knitting a lot harder than that?

Re: NBR: knitting... is it hard?

  • I actually found it very easy to pick up quickly. I only took 2 lessons and learned some basics and have added on by reading books and watching videos on youtube. And it's really fun! I'm totally not a crafty/creative person either.

  • Knitting is not hard. ?If you can crochet then you are ahead of the game. ?Straight forward knit and pearl is very easy to pick up. ?You can google knitting and there are many sites with video instructions to get you started. ?Good luck and have fun!

  • I will tell you something I've never heard another knitter say--knitting is hard!  It took me months to get the motion down and really get comfortable with it.  But once you really have knitting and purling down, the rest really isn't bad at all.  And when you do get it all down--there are one bazillion awesome things you can make!

If you want to try and learn, though, there are lots of helpful websites and videos (youtube has tons).  My favorites are at knittinghelp.com.

Also, google a local "Stitch 'n' ***" group.  Even if you've never knit before, just show up to one of their meetings and you'll have a whole group of people willing to help (knitters are the friendliest and most helpful people you'll ever meet).

  • No, it's not. If you can crochet, you can knit. It really only takes about an hour to learn - but it takes longer to get comfortable with the needles, make even stitches, etc. (In other words, buy some cheap yarn and just make a square/scarf until you have even tension and are comfortable moving on). FYI - reading a pattern isn't obvious, but a good book or online tutorial can lead you through.

Sounds like now is a good time for you to learn!

  • Thanks you guys! I think I will get dressed and head to the craft store. I do have a good friend that knits (I am sure she will knit some things for my baby too!) and although I don't see her often I am sure she would be willing to help!
  • oh no, its SO easy. i taught myself off of youtube videos. search youtube for how to cast on, and how to knit. then you can learn how to purl on youtube too. it so freaking easy. but dont plan on keeping the first thing you make, it probably wont look good, unless you get the slack perfect the first try.
  • My MIL showed me how and in an hour I was knitting away no problem (just not nearly as fast as her!). Crochetting (sp?) on the other hand....I tried that for a good month and still could not get it right!! Knitting came much easier to me.

EDIT: But I did start with just scarves - nothing that needed to be rounded. I still haven't tried that, but mostly because I just don't have the time to knit in general. Plus, MIL has already started kniting blankets, hats, booties, beanies, everything for the baby!!! So no need for me to when she does such a better job  : )

  • i think crocheting is harder. I can only make things that are straight haha so I make scarves and small (SMALL) blankets haha. GL
  • I want to learn really badly too but the starting off is the part where I think you need help.  I just need someone to help me get started and then I think I can go from there.
  • Basic stiches are easy, shaping takes a little more work but isn't hard.  If there's a yarn store nearby you can pop in if you have problems.  My local shop always has loads of women sitting around knitting helping each other figure out patterns and fix mistakes.  YouTube is also great for video tutorials.
  • I taught myself last summer from a book and I am not particularly crafty either. I had some frustrating moments, but once I got the basics I've found it to be super easy.  Check out Ravelry.com I even started a nestie group on there.
  • It might be easier to crochet the hats or boots.  Knitting isn't hard once you get the hang of it, but it's easier to start off with something square or rectangular like a scarf or blanket than something with rounded edges.
