I've heard negative things about the return policy at Target but to answer your question I think 3 is ok for registries.
I'm planning on doing 2
Here's Target's drama..... They only let you return 2 items a year (per driver's license) without a receipt. If it is on your registry but you didn't get a gift receipt and the gift giver didn't have them scan that item from your registry, it's considered that you don't have a receipt. But if the item is on your registy and the gift giver had them scan it, your registry will keep track of what was bought and how much so that even without a gift receipt, you can take it back without a problem because it's on that list. Problem is, a lot of people forget to have them scan the registry. I didn't have too many problems with our wedding stuff, but that's when I had to learn their policies. So basically, between you and DH/FI/BF, you can return up to 4 items without a receipt - I'd do the most expensive items. The other ones, try taking back to Bed, Bath and Beyond (since they sell a lot of the same stuff). They return anything without a receipt. They used to return it for cash til recently - now it's just a gift card.

I'm going to add to the drama. When we tried to return stuff that was bought in duplicate for our wedding shower, they didn't care that it was scanned on the registry, we still needed a gift receipt, even though it clearly showed we only wanted one of a particular item but received 2. And while you can return 2 items a year on your driver's license, it has to be less than $20. Anything more than that, they won't let you return. Target has a shiitty policy if you don't have a receipt.
