I've heard experience posters say to go with the dye/perfume-free regular detergent (I know All makes some) rather than, say Dreft. Cheaper and still shouldn't irritate baby. That's my plan.
I plan to start with All Free & Clear and see what happens. If the baby doesn't have super-sensitive skin, I'll use what I use for our clothes. I refuse to buy Dreft (too expensive!)
I currently use All free & clear because my DH has severe allergies. I will use the same stuff for the baby clothes, too. In general the extra scents added to detergents can irritate baby's sensitive skin.
No, you can't use regular because of baby's sensitive skin. But you can buy the stuff that says "Free" or "Clear" for hypoallergenic people. Don't waste your money on Dreft...this stuff is cheaper and works just as fine.
According to Baby Bargains, you don't need to wash baby clothes separately in Dreft or other baby detergents. My mom always did, and the idea is that it is a gentler soap and is less likely to irritate sensitive baby skin.
What is your regular? We use the natural/eco friendly ones anyway so I will use them on baby clothes too. But regular Tide? no. But then again, I wouldn't use Dreft either.
At our prenatal classes with my first pregnancy, the instructor told us to use regular detergent, but only half the amount. We tried this, but it turned out DS had sensitive skin and would break out in a rash. We used the baby stuff for him until just recently.
I work in pediatric dermatology....we recommend a dye free/perfume free detergent like All Free, Tide Free or Cheer Free. Of course Dreft and Ivory Snow are good too. We tell parents to use it for everyone/everything in the house and for all sheets/towels/etc.
For soaps and creams....DO NOT USE JOHNSONS & JOHNSONS, it's terrible!! We recommend CeraVe soap and cream...or Cetaphil if you can't find it.
These are our recommendations for everyone...newborns and up!

Re: Different laundry detergent for baby clothes?
As long as they don't seem over-sensitive, my pedi said anything smell/additives/etc. free was fine.
