Trying to Get Pregnant

X-rays/MRI's during the 2WW

Would you be concerned about having an x-ray or MRI during the 2WW?  I'm heading out to theorthopedic doctor in a bit for some hip/back issues related to a car accident from years ago, and he may want to do either of these.  I know they ask if your PG...and what do I say?  Maybe?  I'm inclined to say no, because well, I'm not...but do you think there are any concerns I should have over this?  Or am I just thinking too much into it?

Re: X-rays/MRI's during the 2WW

  • I would definitely be concerned.

I had some dental work done a few months ago, and they made sure that I was sure I was not pg before they did any x-rays.  I actually had to reschedule one appointment because it happened to be in my 2ww.

They wouldn't do the x-rays on me unless I was sure that I was not pg.

  • they'll typically ask if there's a chance that you may be pg. i would say yes and wait until you get af just to be safe.
  • I would definitely tell them that you may be.  Back in October i was in a car accident and needed an x-ray and catscan - since I didn't know...they did bloodwork first to check.  Then a few weeks later at my follow up...my doctor was considering another x-ray...and even just wanted me to take motrin - but since I still didn't know (screwed up cycles)...she had me do another blood test before even giving me motrin.
  • I would be concerned.  I had an MRI and I was asked twice while walking to the machine, after filling out the paper work, if I was pregnant.  The bigger issue was the contrast they wanted to use, which I couldn't use due to the fact that I was nursing my DS.  HTH

Really?  I'm a dentist and while we prefer to not take x-rays if someone is pregnant, we will if it's an emergency.  Digital x-rays are particulary low in the amount of radiation given off.

My x-rays were not really an emergency.  It was to check my wisdom teeth, and they used the x-ray machine that goes around your entire head.

Yeah if it's non-emergency then we definitely hold off.  I've never heard of not taking them during the 2ww but then again I doubt most women know that much about their bodies to know when they're in that stage.

I know we've taken some on women that didn't know they were pregnant yet and it's not been a big deal.

  • The first few weeks of pregnancy are very critical to development.  Exposing the fetus to radiation is very bad.

  • I wouldn't. When I was pregnant 7 yrs ago I worked for a vet. I would help w/ the X-rays and didn't know I was pregnant. I miscarried. I have no idea if that was the cause, but still, you just never know.

  • Thanks ladies!  I just got back from my appointment, and he wanted to do x-rays of my hip like I thought.  I told him that I'm actively TTC and won't know the results of this cycle for another week, and he immediately said that I should wait until I know.  I thought it was a silly question, but apparently not.  You girls are the best!
