Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How did you introduce PB?

I think that we're going to try it today at lunch. So far, my best idea is a piece of toast with a thin layer of PB cut into small pieces to avoid much of a choking risk.

Any other ideas? They are very good at eating table foods and don't choke on things at all anymore, so they could handle almost anything I could, I think.

  • If I could give Zachary peanut butter, that's exactly how I'd do it.

  • DS will eat ANYTHING if there's banana with it.  If they don't like the PB at first, maybe put it on something they really love?

  • I was eating toast one day and give him a bite of it that had pb on it. From then on he loved it especially pb and j sandwiches. We had our one year appt and the doctor told me it was on the no foods list and I needed to stop giving it to him. He's such a picky eater and I hate to take away something he will actually eat and he's never had a reaction so I don't know what I"m going to do. Not to get off track from ur question...sorry Stick out tongue

My pedi okayed it at 1 year - some pedis are different!  Paige has never had a problem with it.  I tried at 13 months in the form of a sandwich and it was VERY thick in her mouth - I was so scared. We tried again about a month ago and we did PB&J - it was a lot smooth and she did A LOT better with it this time!  I think I read or heard somewhere that if you spread a thin layer of butter on the bread first that the pb will spread easier and thinner to reduce choking.  GL!

That is so silly that your doctor told you to stop giving it to him.  It's on the "no" list because of allergy concerns, and if your DS has had it multiple times, then he's clearly not allergic.  If my doctor said that, I would definitely NOT listen.  Some advice is just bad advice, even from doctors.

  • We haven't given PB yet, but when I do I will probably do it as a thin layer on a piece of toast...and like pp stated if you put a bit of butter on...it does make it thinner, and put it on while toast is still warm...melts it up nice.  As for when to give PB and when not to...I know it use to be in the 18-24 month range...but I have seen it listed after 12 months...and it is due to allergy concerns...I don't really have any worries about DD because she hasn't had any issues so far and there are no history of any type of food allergies from either side...I will probably wait a few more months though before trying it.  GL let us know how it goes.
