Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Yeah another whole milk question.

Sorry, I know there has been a ton of these lately.

Just wondering when you started with the whole milk?  I started this week since DS will be 1 in a couple of weeks and some of my friends are questioning this since he isn't technically 1 yet.  He is a great eater and has yogurt and cheese everyday so I am not that concerned about it, but now they have me thinking I am doing something "wrong".

Re: Yeah another whole milk question.

  • IMO you are doing nothing wrong.  However my pedi said no milk till 1 year.  That being said, we are just about done with our last can of formula, so I am buying milk this weekend.  DD will be 1 on Wed.

  • My pedi said, and I quote, "there's no magic date" on which to switch and that starting to transition in the weeks before she turned one was fine. We did a slow transition, so we started with one bottle a day about a week before her birthday.
  • Our pedi gave the go ahead at 9 months, but I didn't start until last week.  He only gets 1 bottle of formula anyway (I BF), so it won't be the majority of his eating anyway.  I'm slowly transitioning and he is taking it fine so far.
  • It's not a problem to switch prior to 1 year.  There is always recommended dates, however, a few weeks prior is not doing anything wrong.  Always trust your instincts.

  • we waited till his 12 month appointment and got the pedi's go-ahead.  I did have some questions about the transition, so I'm glad I waited until we were able to speak with her about it.
  • Thank you so much for easing my mind.  Deep down I knew I wasn't doing anything wrong but they had me second guessing my motherly instincts which I know is horrible.  We are doing a very slow transition so far only 3-4oz a day and he still gets 18oz of formula.

  • Not until he was one year old per his Dr., sounds like you are doing it perfectly. HTH
  • My ped gives the go ahead after 11 months but we actually started my younger DD at 10.5 months as we were taking her off the bottle due to her reflux and she didn't want her formula out of a sippy cup.  We knew she was fine on dairy so I was worried.
