When to give OJ??

Hey ladies. When I was dropping DS of at daycare today there was a boy eating his breakfast that is about 3 months older than him and he had a sippy cup full of OJ. Whereas Mikey had a sippy cup full of milk. As I was giving Mikey his breakfast I was thinking hmmmmm when can I give him OJ??? I have yet to try it with him. Anyone give OJ yet?

  • I don't have an answer, as I was wondering this myself!

  • You can try it when ever you'd like.

FWIW - we don't do juices.  Even my 2.5 yr old doesn't get juice unless he's sick or when potty training.

Juices have minimal nutritional value and are CHOCK full of sugar.

That kid you saw having his OJ probably didn't have his teeth brushed after that sippy of juice and that sugar sat on his teeth eating away at them all day long.

You're much better off sticking to milk to drink and whole real fruits instead of juices for better nutrition.

  • I think it is technically okay after one year, but it's very acidic, so if DC has a sensitive stomach, it might not be the best idea to give a whole sippy of OJ. DD doesn't really like juice, though they do give it to her sometimes at daycare (they provide all food/drinks in the toddler room). I don't think she really drinks it or maybe she takes a sip. She prefers water and milk so we tend to stick with that, unless she is constipated then I try to get her to take a little juice mixed with her water.
  • IMO you should never give juice.  It has minimal nutritional value.  Basically it's just empty calories which fill up your child when they could be eating something that is good for them.  Give him mandarian orange slices (packed in pear juice) instead.
  • I started giving my older DD juice in very small amounts at a 1 year and that includes OJ. I will start giving my 11 month old OJ a small amount in the next month. I will mix it with water at first though.
