S/O: Useful Words

Madeleine has quite a few words, (animals, mostly) but not so many words that are helpful for the daily routine. She says "mmmm mum" which can mean "yummy," "I want more," or "I'm hungry,"  depending on the context.

I am really trying to teach "up" and "more."  I think our lives will be easier once she learns those two.

So, does your child say any useful words yet?  Which words are you trying to encourage?

Re: S/O: Useful Words

  • When DS is full he will say done. And we have taught him more with sign language. Other that that not really useful words but according to the Dr he can say a lot for his age. He knows the meaning and can say; mama, dada, nana (banana), ball, book, car, papa. And he knows how to make the noises for cow and monkey.

  • DS has a lot of words.  I don't know how many I would consider useful.  He does say done when he is done eating or when he doesn't want to do whatever we are doing at the time anymore.  DH said that DS bit his leg today and looked up at him and said food.  That was the first time he said food, so I think that is useful, minus the biting part.  He also says go and out which tells us he's bored and wants to go play outside.  He says baba when he's thirsty.  Most of his other words name thngs.  We haven't really done anything to encourage him other than talking to him a lot and repeating words when he says them and we let him know how proud we are when he says a new word.

  • She say Da-Do (Thank You), in the right context when you give her something. Emily Post would be so pleased. She also freaks at the sight of the MumMum box and calls them by name.

  • DD has some, but the two I'm getting most excited about are "poop" and "help."  Poop she uses to tell me when she's done (can't wait til she uses it BEFORE she goes!!).  Help I've started b/c she has a short fuse, and will flip if she can't do something.  Now she gets upset, then I tell her "Help!" and she giggles and says it and hands over to me whatever it is that is frustrating her.  I sure hope this reduces frustration!

  • DD is not saying much at this point.  She says "nom nom" which means nursing, but she usually lets me know by lunging at my chest and sticking her arm down my shirt, so the words are really secondary.  She says "nana" for banana, and that's really about it at this point.  I've been using "up," "all done," and "more" consistently with her hoping that she'll pick up on them soon.

  • DD has quite a few words that she can say like mama, dada, hi, bye, no, bear, ball, Mary (her cousin), please, yes, mote (for remote)...and a few others.  obviously they are the baby version like pea for please, baw for ball, etc.  These are the ones that she uses more spontaneously.  She can imitate more when she feels like it.  She also does a bunch of sounds, especially barking for a dog, moo when she sees a cow, etc.
  • Katen's vocab recently exploded with a lot of new more useful words but there are some letters she just can't seem to use. (for example, h's and l's) We overcome those by using sign language and life is so much easier.

I've also recognized that she gets really REALLY angry when she can't do something herself. By teaching the sign for "help" it saves us at least three tantrums a day. She's so proud when I understand what she's "saying" and the signing hasn't hindered her vocab development in the least. She's known the sign for "more" since about 6mos and says "more" while doing the sign now as well.

  • Wow, good job little ones.  DS is younger, but he only says Hi, baba and dada.  Dada is for everything though.

  • I guess it wasn't the best title, in retrospect.  All words are useful, but some are more urgent.  "Bye-bye cat" is awesome, but "up" instead of pulling on my legs and shrieking would be most appreciated.
