Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When is she supposed to be off purees?

DD still eats purees for lunch and 50% of the time for dinner (she eats a waffle or yogurt for breakfast). I'll admit it's mostly because it's easy and she likes it. Also, DH and I usually don't eat dinner until after she goes to bed. Is it bad that she's still eating so many purees? Is there a certain age I should eliminate them entirely? I don't want her to be missing out nutritionally.?

  • when she's ready.   dc were on mostly "tablefoods"... eating what we were for dinner and small bite size type foods by their 1st birthdays.  but my bff's dd was so not ready yet by her 1st birthday.  just test as you see fit.

  • There's a post about half way down the page from earlier today talking about the same thing and there are lots of 1+ babies eating tons of purees (my ds included). He gets purees and a finger food for breakfast, puree lunch, finger food only dinner. I think it'll be a few months before we transition to all table foods, he's just not efficient enough yet. We're still working on transitioning off the bottle first.

  • I don't know, but I plan to ask this at our 12mo appt in 2 weeks' time.  DD eats mostly purees too.  She eats more in one sitting if it's pureed vs. if I give her the actual food to put in her mouth (cut up bananas, cooked peas, etc.) - so nutritionally I don't think it's a bad thing.  I wonder more about the developmental effects, especially since DD shows no interest in holding the spoon herself.
  • Nicholas has had massive stomach/eating issues, so this may not be too helpful, but he is still on 75% purees at 15 months and his pedi said that even w/o his issues, that is still normal.  He will feed himself with a spoon.
