Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Have you taken a YMCA swim class?

I am considering this for my 20 month old.  She's a little fearful of water...  I would like to build up her confidence.  However, I am not a swimmer either.  What do they do in that class? What are the parental requirements?  I would ask at Y but classes are closing soon and instructor is unavailable this week.  TIA

  • We did when our dd was six months, and she LOVED it from the second she touched the water.  There is no real swimming involved at that age, just getting them used to water, being splashed, dancing in the water with songs  and toys, etc.  My niece is in the class for toddlers and they actually swim in that one, with floatation devices on their backs.  Good luck, and have fun!

  • We're enrolled in a Y swim class right now and DS loves it. (Granted, he's been swimming fairly regularly since 2 mos. and I've always liked the water.) Like PP said, there isn't a whole lot of actual swimming involved. They don't even come close to getting their heads wet... but, they learn how to splash, kick their legs, blow bubbles, and jump off the side. You don't have to do anything more than hold DD.

  • I refer to it more as water play class.  No real swimming.  It is just songs and movement in the water.  We did it when DD was 9 months.  It was a great way to get her in the pool more.  You are in water that you can stand in so no parental requirements.
  • We just finished the little shrimp class with DD and she loves it!  We're planning to do another class this summer.  The parent gets in the pool with their child, water doesn't go anymore than waist high.  You just try to get them to learn to kick their legs and scoop their arms.  We practiced jumping off the side of the pool on the count of three and several songs were sung in group circles.  HTH!
  • We took one with my DD last summer, she had just turned 2 and personally I hated the class.  I have heard great things from other people though so I really think it depends on the instructor.  They basically did games and songs to get your child comfortable in the water.  They would jump off the side into your arms, you would hold them and walk in a circle or have them reach for a ball.  We are taking my DD's to Foss Swim Schools now (loval chain here in MN) and it is more money but it is excellent.  They do the same basic things but Foss is geared for kids so the water is really warm adn the teachers are all trained to deal with little kids.
