Thoughts on Ikea crib/dresser?

I've always viewed Ikea as "college/single furniture."  Cute stuff, inexpensive, but not really for the long term.

But the more I think about it, the more Ikea isnt sounding too bad.  H and I are on a budget, and Baby Bargains gave the Ikea crib an "A" grade.

Thoughts?  Would you buy an Ikea crib, or just suck it up and pay the extra money for a nicer one?

Re: Thoughts on Ikea crib/dresser?

  • I'm pretty sure that BranFlake on 3rd tri bought from IKEA...maybe page her..

  • i couldnt say i found some good sales at jcpenneys mine is $250 i think i though that was a good buy since i see most cribs can cost up to $600- 1000. good luck
  • I'd go with an Ikea crib, I'm on a tight budget too, and our little peanut is sleeping in a hand me down crib with baby teeth marks all over it lol! It does have a good mattress though!

  • I love the cribs at Ikea! DH wouldn't let me get white and the birch color would clash with everything we have. I say go for it!!
  • We were going to go with an Ikea crib and changer but ended up buying one from Target on our way down to Ikea.
  • we went all out for Rylee (spend 1k on all of it) and new baby will use all that.  We could not do that again for her, so she got a Ikea crib.  She hasn't spent anytime in it, but hey, its a crib. go for it!

  • Just went to Ikea this weekend. I looked at the cribs again but I wasn't sold. They look really cheaply made. Very good prices but they are not the sturdiest looking. Huh?

p.s. I bought a 3 drawer dresser this weekend for $40!!!. Looks very sturdy!

  • I would do it if we didn't have DD's crib to use (which we bought at Walmart b/c at the time we didn't live near an Ikea).  I see it as the furniture I am using in the nursery will be used for a few years and then donated or sold on craigslist.  I am not looking for family heirlooms.  If it is safe and is good enough quality to withstand multiple children, then that is all I need.

Of course appearance is another factor, and I would not buy something I didn't like the looks of because it will be around for a few years.  I personally try to balance my taste with staying in our budget.

  • We have the white Gulliver crib. ?We just set it up this past weekend. ?It's super sturdy and it's not painted like many other cribs, it's actually a tinted lacquer over beech wood. ?We also like that IKEA cribs are made in Europe, not China. ?You can't beat $99 for the crib and $79 for the most expensive mattress IKEA sells, and it does convert to a toddler bed. ?IKEA cribs are also one of Consumer Reports' Best Buys. ?GL with your decision!
  • Dh and I checked out Ikea for price but we weren't that impressed.  We ultimately ended up ordering through JCpenny and having it shipped to the store. G! It seems that everything you buy for baby is a research project huh?
  • We are going with a crib and dresser from Walmart's Babymod line, but I seriously considered IKEA stuff for awhile. ?Our entire bedroom set is IKEA. ?I change my mind too much to spend a fortune on furniture.

  • We are getting a white Ikea crib.  We are short on space and it is by far the most compact crib that I've found.  I've decided I'd rather splurge on a nice, organic mattress and save on the actual crib.  The Baby Bargains rating is what sold me on it.

  • I LOVE ikea--we dont have one here, but if I can get to Portland I'd like to pick one up
  • We're on a tight budget too! I wanted a dark brown-black crib so we bought a Graco crib at Target ($159) and a 4 drawer dresser at IKEA to match ($99). The crib is in "espresso" but I found that the brown-black color of IKEA furniture matches perfectly! Our crib is a 4-in-1 but IKEA sells teething rail guards that you can put on the crib so your baby won't eat the finish off.

We also got the Gulliver crib (in white) at Ikea along with the Hemnes changing table and wardrobe.  They look fantastic and it was especially important to us to get furniture with small footprints since we live in a pretty small space.

We have the crib and base of changing table put together so far.  (We put our own drawer pulls to match our nursery theme).

  • I would save money now on the crib that baby will only use for a few years and splurge later on on a bedroom set that will last throughout there youth. I spent a fortune on a crib for my daughter thinking I would use it as a toddler bed, twin headboard and all that and then ended up thinking it looked wierd as big girl furniture. This time we bought a crib at target. I did not even think about IKEA or I would have looked there....besides it's a whole load of fun to watch Hubby curse and throw things while he tries to figure out how to put that IKEA stuff together!!
  • We are going with the Ikea Levisk collection, but not the crib. I find it to be very short. Something about it doesn't feel right. Ikea cribs are all very short. My husband is pretty tall, so I want to make sure that both he and I are comfortable with it. We will probaby get a crib from Target. However we will also probably move the child over to the toddler bed from Ikea, because it becomes a twin sized bed.
  • Sure! why not?  Especially since it got good reviews in Baby Bargains.

I'm planning on buying a crib from WalMart for under $200.  I just simply can't afford to spend $500+ on a crib

  • We're getting both the Leksvik crib/toddler bed conversion and the dresser with changing table top. Most of our house is furnished with Ikea, as was our previous place, and I absolutely love it. Despite what you might think, it's actually all very durable, and I like that it's more environmentally friendly (smaller footprint) than most other brands of furniture.

Everyone in Europe swears by Ikea - I can honestly say that I don't know very many people who have no Ikea at all in their homes, and these are people from all different backgrounds, both financially and style-wise.

    I say go for it!
