Moms of 2+ : Pregnancies same or different?

Hello all... I have some questions for moms who have had more than one baby.

~Were your pregnancys similar or very different?

~Were your children the same gender?

~How about labor & delivery? Similar? Opposite?

~And lastly, how about the size of the baby? My daughter was/is itty bitty, I'm wondering if I'm likely to have another "peanut."

Anything else you can share? I'm noticing my 2nd pregnancy is very similar to the first so far (I'm about 10 weeks) and I'm curious if I am having another girl. I'm also very interested to know if my labor will be similar (*very easy delivery with 1st). Looking to hear other's experiences to entertain my curiousity.

Re: Moms of 2+ : Pregnancies same or different?

  • My mom said her pregnancy with me and my sister was very different, she had c's with both of us.

    For me:

    My pregnancies were pretty similar

    1st was a boy, 2nd was s girl

I had L&D with my son, it was hell that ended with an emergency c.  My daughter was a planned c so not labor.

They were about the same size.  My son was 9 lbs and my daughter was 8.13.

But.....there is 14 years seperating the 2 and my daughter is with my current husband.

  • I can only share on the pg part, not the rest of it, since #2 isn't due until April!  First time I had a girl and now I'm pg with a boy.  These pgs have been crazy different.  Claire's pg was pretty easy overall...I had some m/s (nausea but no vomiting) from about 6w to 12w.  This time I was sick for about 12 weeks total (no vomiting again, just general feelings of ICK constantly from 7w to about 18/19w...maybe even a little longer).  I have varicose veins now but had none with Claire.  I have low platelets this time and have to go for monthly bloodwork to monitor it, didn't have that with Claire.  I am gaining weight much more slowly this time and I am just not getting as big all over as I did with Claire.  that's about it for now!  hahaha  Oh, and the similarities are that I had wicked heartburn the first time and I have it again.  Um, that's about the only thing that is the same...

  • More alike than different.

    No, boy and a girl

Similar labor both induction however the delivery was much smoother with my son

DS was a half pound smaller

The hear rates for my kids were the same, i gained less weight the second time

  • Pregnancies were the same

    Same gender

Had a vaginal delivery for #1 and a C-section for #2 (baby #1 got stuck b/c he was big so we opted for a C-section for #2)

    DS #1 was 9 lbs 10 ounces and DS#2 was 9 lbs 15 ounces.

    Mommy to three adorable boys!
  • So far the two pregnancies have been very similiar

    One boy, one girl

Don't know about labor & delivery yet, I can only hope that is similar

DS was a peanut born at 6lb 5oz.  The doc is expecting this baby to be very similiar in size.

  • ~Were your pregnancys similar or very different?  Very different.  I was sick for more than half of my pregnancy with DD1 and only a few weeks with DD2.  I also carried very different.  DD1 was very high my entire preg and DD2 was low.

~Were your children the same gender? Yes

~How about labor & delivery? Similar? Opposite?  With DD1 my water broke and I started having contractions.  I pushed 4 hours, because her head got stuck.  I was in labor for about 10 hours total.  DD2 I started having contractions about 5-6 mins apart and my water ended up breaking in the hospital.  I pushed for 10 minutes.  I was only in labor for about 3 hours.

~And lastly, how about the size of the baby?  DD1 was 8 lbs 8 oz and DD2 was 8 lbs 10 oz.

  • -My pregnancies were very different. I had GD with DS, and I didn't have it with DD. I was in a lot more physical pain with her, though.

    -No. #1-boy #2-girl

-Completely different. DS would have been overdue if I hadn't been induced for my GD... my labor with him was over 20 hours long (2 hours of pushing!). DD came almost a week early, and my labor with her was about 7 hours long. I only had to push for 7 minutes too (3 sets).

-DS was 7.5lbs, 20 or so inches. DD was 8.5lbs, and relatively close in inches.

Just like my kids' personalities, my pregnancies and labors were as different as night and day.

  • ~ DC#1, I had m/s so badly I lost 12 lbs and it lasted for 4 months.  With DC, #2, I only got sick a handful of times.  This past pregnancy, DC #3, I had alot of m/s but less than #1.

~ No, Boy, girl, then girl.

~ I had early labor with DS (#1) and 12 hrs of active labor.  With DD, I just had 12hrs of active labor.  Not sure yet for DC #3, give me a few more days ;)

~Both of mine so far were exactly the same weight - 8lbs 5oz.

I carried the same the second time around, but the thrid time now, I'm carrying way differently - lower, bigger.

  • ~Were your pregnancies similar or very different? almost identical - I swear, it could have been the same pregnancy.  Cravings were slightly different and the heartburn was worse with DD#2.  I also gained less weight with her but that was a bad thing.  Still, I carried the same and whatnot.

~Were your children the same gender?  Same - Two girls

~How about labor & delivery? Similar? Opposite?  I was induced with DD#1 so it's hard to say.  I will say that from the time I got to 4cm to when I delivered was almost exactly 4 hours with both girls.  With DD#1, they broke my water at 4cm and with DD#2, I got an epi (that didn't work).  But in that sense, my L&D were very similar and quick.

~And lastly, how about the size of the baby? Tiny girls.  I have tiny girls.  DD#1 was 5lbs12oz and I was induced at 37w3d because of IUGR concerns.  DD#2 was 6lbs even and came on her own at 36w2d.  My midwife decided I grow babies strangely (I carry very very weird) and quickly and that "full term" for my babies is probably around 35-36 weeks (which is why DD#1 had slowed/stopped growing).  As of right now, DD#2 is less than half-a-pound heavier than DD#1 and has pretty much followed that trend the entire first year.

All this said, I've had other friends who have two of the same gender who had totally opposite PG.  Sick as a dog with one and not a minute with the other, etc. etc.  It could go either way and means nothing.

  • I can only tell you PG because DS#2 is due in June.  So.... pregnancies are completely different so far.....and they are both boys.

  • I had a boy, then a girl and my pregnancies were very different. I was induced with my first, but went into labor on my own with my second. Both resulted in emergency c-sections, so that was the same! My son was 5 ounces less than my daughter, but he was consistently bigger than her throughout his baby hood. She is a bigger toddler than he was at the same age, though!

  • My pregnancys were VERY different.  I had no morning sickness at all with #1, & no complications at all. Pg #2 I had nausea/morning sickness all through the first trimester, I was anemic, I had GD/insulin.

     Pg#1 I had a boy, and pg#2 was a little girl

Well, Labor and delivery, was total opposite too.  #1, I was already dilated at 36 weeks(3cm, 50% effaced), water broke at 37 weeks, 8 hours of non medicated labor, and 14 minutes of pushing!  Pg#2, I never dilated at all, she was breech from 36 weeks on and would not turn, so I had to have a c/s.

Ds was a Peanut...born at 37 weeks, he was 4lbs 14oz and 18 1/2 inches.  So when it came to dd, I was VERY nervous..considering I was 38.5 weeks, and had GD (on insulin)...needless to say she was still a peanut, at only 5lbs 12oz and 18 1/2 inches.

  • My pregnancies were complete opposites. Both were girls.

#1 - Very few "symptoms". Gained 55 lbs.

#2 - Every "symptom" in the book. Lost 15, then gained 30 for a total net gain of 15.

My first ended up in an emergency c-sec (after 9 hours of labor) under general anesthesia and with a vertical incision. I was not a candidate for VBAC so my second was a scheduled c-sec, therefore I really can't compare labor and delivery.

As far as size - my first was born the day after her due date at 6 lbs 4 oz (so also a peanut). My second was born at 39 weeks exactly, and was 7 lbs 5 oz. Still not big, but bigger than my first.

  • - Different.  With DS, I had spotting and different early symptoms & as a result was on pelvic rest a lot. With DD, not a drop of spotting.

    - A boy and a girl

    - Labor and delivery were somewhat different.  I was 6 days late when labor started with DS & GBS+.  Water broke at 4 cms, his heart rate didn't do well so I had to stay in bed, got the epidural, had an emergency c-section & he was in the NICU for 10 days.  With DD, I was 8 days late, labored at home as long as I could, got to the hospital at 8-9 cms and had an amazing, med-free VBAC.  She was perfectly healthy.

     - DS was 7lb, 13 oz and 22".  DD was 8lbs 2 oz & 21".  DS was long and skinny.  DD is tall, filled out with a big head.  She's been off the charts at 100 percentiles since birth.  No little babies for me!
