2nd Trimester

How much was your childbirth class?

I just asked a friend what she paid for hers and she said "$250".  I can't believe it.  Are they all in that ballpark?  My OB told me to call the hospital between 16-18 weeks to set it up, so I'll be finding out how expensive theirs is, but I think I have sticker shock.  Is $250 normal?!

  • The one we are going to is $150 and my insurance reimburses me for $50 of that.

  • Holy Crap! I was thinking more like something between $25 and $50. Doesn't the hospital plan on getting enough of our money during delivery!!! Sheesh!

  • Just signed up for mine last week. They have a fri night/all day sat one that they only do once a month which is the one I took, because FI won't be here for 5 weeks in a row. But anyway, it was $116.

  • Mine was only $60, I wouldn't have been able to go if it was $250!  Dang!
  • Ours is $80/couple and my insurance reimburses $50.
  • Do you mean childbirth class as in an ongoing birthing class such as Bradley method or Lamaze?  Or do you mean a 1 day class at the hospital?
  • our class will be $80/couple.  its 4 sessions, each 2 hours.  its childbirth/lamaze.

    DD - February 2011
  • Ours was free if you delivered at the hospital.  The baby care class was $10 and the breastfeeding class was $15 or 20.  There were other classes at a different hospital my doctor didn't have privileges at that I looked into for scheduling reasons and it would have been about $100.

  • $40/couple which includes four childbirth sessions, a newborn care class and a breastfeeding class... six classes total. $250 is NUTS.

  • The ones offered at my hospital are free. I was really shocked by this because I thought for sure I was going to have to pay out of pocket for them but when I got a pamplet in the mail about them today it said cost was free.

EDIT: Let me also add in that it is 5, 2 hour sessions.

  • Ours is $95 for a 5 week class. THen I also signed up for a one night breastfeeding class that is $20. I just signed up this week (i am 24 weeks) and good thing because i got the last spot in both classes!

  • For my husband and me, $285 but heck, this is NYC... EVERYthing is ridiculous.
  • The one we are looking at is $150.  They offer extra classes free of charge such as breastfeeding ones, or car seat safety ones if you sign up for the big one.

  • The childbirth class is $135 (includes lunch!) and then the breastfeeding, infant cpr, and babycare basics classes are $35 each. $240 total. Our FSA said they reimburse for the birth class though. Worth trying.

  • Bradley classes are usually $250, this is probably the class your friend took. But they are worth every penny.
  • Mine is $300.00

  • Mine was $6 each for DH and I, so $12 total.  Though I think our hospital subsidizes most of the cost.  Good luck!
  • I live in NYC and the classes are $300 here.
  • 75 dollars for ours.

  • My hospital offers all of their classes for free (childbirth, breastfeeding, one for those going natural, a multiples class, infant cpr, infant comprehensive, etc...).
  • Ours will be a regular childbirth class at the hospital (infant care, car seat safety, hospital tour, etc).  I can't wait to call and find out.  It's intriguing me now seeing the broad range of prices you have all paid.

  • We just looked into it and the Bradley class (not through the hospital) is $250 and the hospital classes are six two-hour sessions for $160.
  • Mine is $175 for six, two-hour childbirth/lamaze classes.
  • At the hospital it is $90 for a one day class.  We considered taking a different class from a birthing center that was $215 but it was 6 weeks for 3hrs each time.

  • $125 for a 7 week session.

  • At our hospital:

$195 if we want to do the 6 week course
$95 if we want to do the condensed weekend course

I think we'll do the condensed course just because I don't think $195 is worth it. Our insurance won't reimburse us anything for childbirth classes.

  • Not sure what the class cost breaks down to... but my delivery and regular check-up appts are a package deal through my hospital and this includes the childcare classes....not sure if it because of my ins or what but I thought it was neat for them to do that:)
  • The classes from my ob are $125, but I checked out the hospital that I will give birth at and they were only $70. 2 classes for 2 1/2 hours each. I'm going with the hospital classes. $250 sounds like a lot to me.
  • $120 for us but we decided not to take the class.

  • At the hospital where I work, they have a 6 week class (2 1/2 hours one night a week) for $70. They have a 2 day class (6 hours each on a Sat and Sun) for $75, and a one-day "Just the basics" class (8 hours one one day) for $45.
