2nd Trimester

question for the second time moms- stupid question

I was reading that right after you give birth, you weigh about the same as you do when you are five months pregnant.

This may be a stupid question, but do you carry the weight the same way you do at five months?  In other words, do you still look pregnant?  Or is the weight more spread around?

I was just wondering about that...I know it might be one of those "depends on your body type" questions.

  • Most people still look pregnant.  There are a few lucky ones who walk out with a flat belly.  I was NOT one of them.  You look pregnant, but your belly feels flabby, like a deflated balloon, it's really weird.

  • Yes, most (if not all?) women still look pg.  Here is a pic of me at DS's church dedication, 9 days old.  When there was a baby in there, it didn't look so.... flabby.  But clearly I still look pg:

  • I bought a pair of high waisted Spanx to help push it all in.  I used them almost everyday for the first few months!

  • Ditto first poster.
  • I defintely looked more than 5 months pregnant for a while. ?As my mother in law said it "looks like you still have one in there". ?Thanks.
  • It's like a deflated pg belly.  I honestly barely even remember what I looked like pp.  I just remember my mom telling me 3 mos later to stop wearing my mat jeans :)

  • Agree with pp...you will most likely still look pregnant.  Other things that can influence this are if you have an IV fluids...I left more swollen and no lbs lighter than when I walked in despite having had a baby and losing all of the amniotic fluid, placenta, etc.  Damn those fluids.  I had to drink tons of water and keep my feet up for a week to get rid of it.
  • My stomach went flat right after I had both of my daughters and I could fit in my pre-pg clothes within 2 weeks.  But, my stomach looked like a deflated balloon for a few weeks, it was disgusting.  I am sure I will be different this time though because I weigh more than I did before.
  • I still looked pregnant for a couple of weeks. I looked about 5-6 months.

  • I looked 6 mos pg rigth after birth.

Regarding the actual weight, my scale did not show any weight loss because of all the fluids I had received.  I was very swollen.  I lost all the weight in less than 3 weeks but my stomach was never the same. It was big.  This time it may be worse because I started this pregnancy 15 lbs heavier.  :-(

  • I did not look pregnant, I just looked a little more chubby than usual.  It turned out I was carrying a lot more weight in my thighs than I realized while pregnant (maybe b/c I hadn't seen them in a few months, LOL!)

I had some weight in my belly, but it was pretty evenly distributed between all the usual areas (belly, thighs, breasts).  Most of it melted off within 2 weeks, though.

ETA: Oh, yeah.  My belly was the nastiest flabby jelly thing you've ever seen.  Yuck!

  • I looked a little heavier when I came out of the hospital, but not pregnant.  Everybody carries differently, though.  I'm tall and long-waisted, so DD had a lot of room to go up before she had to go out.  My friends who are shorter tend to look more pregnant for longer postpartum.

  • I did not look pregnant but a lot of people do. I had sort of a jello belly for several weeks though. I am not sure when that went away 8ish weeks or so? I was able to wear my larger non maternity clothes when I came home from the hospital but I know several people who have had to wear maternity for the first 6-8 weeks 9some less than that)

edit: I also thought I would add that with my son I did not have an IV yet my legs were swollen for about a week. I did not swell at all during pregnancy so it was a labor/post partum thing for me. I had an IV with dd but I don't remember having any swelling with her.
