Dallas-Fort Worth Babies

Tell me about Dallas

Hi Ladies.  I'm a regular on the Cincinnati board, but DH & I are moving to Dallas around June (tentative date).  I just jumped over here and it seems like a great board.
Since I'll know NO ONE, I'm hoping to get some advice here.

So tell me about Dallas.  I know that's broad, but I know nothing.  DH will be working at Univ of TX Southwestern and we want to buy a house.

TIA!

Re: Tell me about Dallas

  • Welcome to the board! There are a lot of great ladies here and we are getting pretty good at planning some gtgs I think.?

Dallas is big and has lots going on. The traffic is pretty horrible IMO, but other than that I have enjoyed living in the area.
If I were moving here and my husband was going to work at UT Southwestern, I think I would look for a place to live North of Dallas. Richardson and Plano are some pretty established areas, but the further north you go, you will get into some newer areas with newer construction. I might stay away from the Carrollton/Farmers Branch area.?
There are also some great communities in what is known as the Mid-Cities area. Those are the cities between Fort Worth and Dallas.
    ?
If you have any specific questions, ask away.?

  • HI there and welcome!

The DFW area is BIG. It emcompasses Dallas and Ft. Worth (obviously) and a plethora of other smaller cities or communities. If you're going to be on the Dallas side of the metroplex for work, I would stay/live as close as possible as traffic is a nightmare around here. Plano, Frisco, Richardson are all great North Dallas choices ... depending on your budget.

We live in the midcities (Bedford) which we like, because it's like living right smack dab in the middle of everything, and it's close to all the major highways. Nothing is 'too' out of reach ... although we live closer to Ft. Worth than to Dallas. However, being in the middle of everyting does tend to cause more traffic, and as it's a more established area, there isn't as much new construction going on (if that's what you're looking for).

DFW is hot. We're about ready for Spring here (I have the windows open today, and the daffoldils are up in my front yard), but that doesn't mean we won't have 1 or 2 more cold snaps. Spring is from March - May (ish) ... Summer is from June to September (at least) ... it might start cooling down for a "fall" in Oct ... but it could be Nov/Dec before we see cooler weather as well. It all just depends. Be ready for 100* + weather for at least a couple months during the summer.

My favorite DFW/Texas happenings are the Bluebonnets in March, the TX State fair in Sept/Oct, and the Rodeo in February.

Hope that helps!  Let us know if you have specific questions :)

  • Thanks ladies!  I'm probably going to start looking at areas to live & definately take your suggestions.  I don't really have specific questions currently because I seriously know NOTHING about the area (I've never been there & DH has been there once for like a day for his interview).

I'll be checking back here on & off, thanks again!

  • We are actually moving out of state this summer too. We have found this site to be helpful since we know nothing about Denver.

    https://www.city-data.com/

  • I use that site for work when I'm researching a new area : )
  • One thing that I love about this area are the people. Most everyone is very friendly, helpful, and easy to make friends with. A negative is that it gets really hot! I mean hot! Last summer the thermostat on our patio read 110 in August. I agree with the pp. North of Dallas would be perfect for you although it can get a bit pricey.
  • any good job website recos?  I'm going to need a job.  I'm currently in restaurant marketing.  TIA!
  • Oh, and I work for re/max (not a realtor though) and if you find an area that you like or once you figure out which city you would like to look, I can find all the active listings in that area for you and email them. Just let me know!
