2nd Trimester

How far along were you when you found out gender?

My last pregnancy we found out when I was either 14 weeks or 17 weeks. I think it was for sure the 14th only because it was my first pregnancy appointment (It took me forever to get moved back to Kansas) and they did a sono just make sure everything was okay...and they could see right away.

I'm hoping we can find out that soon again. I've read online some people were able to see at 12 weeks. I wasn't sure on the accuracy though, I assume it was accurate. My books say the parts become visible about that time.

  • We will find out at19 weeks. Honestly, I wouldn't trust finding out at 12 weeks. That's not very accurate.
  • I was almost 19wks with DD's big u/s last time.  We couldn't tell with the NT scan.  With this one, tech wouldn't even guess at the NT scan (she pointed out that the baby was only 2 inches long so easy to make a mistake) and the baby wouldn't uncross his/her legs long enough to tell at 16wks so we'll find out Monday.

  • 12w2d with both my pregnancies - both were accurate - but both were also all boys - which are easier to spot that early on.

12w is the earliest you can tell - but even then it's still so early any good US tech will say it's not 100% by far.... esp if they guess girl.

my DS was confirmed boy at 20w... and my twins confirmed boys at 16w and again at 20w.

  • It really depends on when you can get an u/s. I have never heard any earlier than 14 weeks, but it was also with reservation. They were never completely sure, and I personally wouldn't feel good about trusting the results of something that isn't very accurate due to the fact of it being so early.

Normally people here find out between 18 and 21 weeks at their level 2 u/s.

  • 16 weeks.

  • I think it also depends on the position of the baby. My son was spread eagle almost in the sono...it was obvious! :) I think waiting till around the same time as we did last time will be more accurate. But i'm scheduled to have many sonos...already had one. Have another next week and each time I'm in there after for the first few months.
  • 21 weeks, but they thought I was only 19 weeks...
  • I dont get to have another u/s sound until I am 20 weeks and I should be able to find out then!

  • What do you mean level 2 ultrasound? You mean the higher tech 3d/4d? Our office uses the 3d....when I had my sono last week at 5w3d it was very clear...very clear it was a gummy bear, lol.
  • At 12.5 weeks the u/s tech for our NT scan said she was leaning towards boy, but at that stage it could be a swollen clitoris.  We had another u/s at 18 weeks and 19 weeks which both said boy.  Our amnio results confirmed boy.

ETA:  With DD we were told girl through u/s at 18 weeks and again at 27 weeks.   We had an u/s with her at 13 weeks, but they didn't even make an attempt to guess the sex.

She probably means 2d, that's what most DRs use.

This is the u/s done typically around the 20 week mark. They are able to see all 4 chambers of the heart. Its not the 3d/4d u/s. It can also be called the growth/anatomy scan because they take a look at all the parts and make sure everything looks fine.?

  • I've just found out today at 21 weeks. Had my ultrasound Tuesday but wanted to wait til Valentine's to find out together with my fiance (he lives in England so I had to send him the tape of the ultrasound). It's a boy!
  • 21 weeks exactly.

  • I have my big u/s scheduled and I'll be 20w3d.

We had the NT scan at 12w4d and the tech did throw a guess (boy) but she also said that at this point it could really be anything. If it turns out to be true it will be just a concidence... after all you have 50% chance of guessing right, right??

  • 18 weeks, 5 days.

I wouldn't trust it before 16 or 17 weeks.  Not that you can't see, but that it just isn't that accurate at 12 weeks... or 14.

I guess if you don't mind them taking a stab at guessing at 12 or 14 weeks and having that end up incorrect later, go for it.  For me, I wanted to be sure, so I waited until the big U/S.

  • My dr could tell at 10w and 13w, and I personally have known all along (just had a strange intuition since my BFP) but we will confirm it in 2 weeks.
  • Estimated 70% guess at 13w3d

    Confirmed 99.9% at 20w2d

  • I had my NT scan at 13 weeks and the tech felt pretty certain it was a boy.  I had another U/S at 17 weeks and at 20 weeks and both times the (two different) techs said they were certain it was a boy.
  • We found out at 12w1d and they told us they were 90% sure it was a boy...at 19w they confirmed it.
  • We went at 20 weeks.... I dont think I could have went before that.... I would be wondering if it was accurate or not.... :)
  • We'll hopefully be able to tell at our 21 week ultrasound.
  • We go when I will be 18w and hope to find out then.
