2nd Trimester

For those with a home doppler...

Did you ever have a day that you couldn't find the heartbeat?  We heard it loud and strong last week, but today we've tried for over an hour (with 3 separate attempts) and nothing...  My first ultrasound (NT scan) is 10 days away and I might go crazy by then.  If we do hear the heartbeat again, I'm sending this doppler back right away.

I'm freaked out and would appreciate any advice!

Re: For those with a home doppler...

  • I can't say that I have,  BUT, try it again with a full bladder and go really slowly keeping the "probe" pointed downwards.  Make sure you use plenty of goop too.

    Good luck!

  • your still early to hear it on the doppler but it depends on where the baby is sitting....I always found her really low by my crotch..

  • It all depends on how the baby is positioned too. Your baby is still tiny at your stage so it might be harder to pick up the heartbeat. Try using a lot of the gel and going across near your hairline really slowly.
  • i have one. ive always heard it. you are early to hear it on the doppler, so dont get discouraged. you need a full bladder to hear better, and you have to make sure you have ample lube on ur belly! just go really slow. and ur uterus is just coming up past ur pelvic bone... so dont go too high. soon you will hear it as soon as you start! i hear mine 3 times aday. morning noon and night. haha. were nutz but its very reasurring..good luck
  • I haven't had that problem, but I didn't even attempt to use the doppler until 12w.  Like the PPs said, you're still early - it wouldn't surprise me at all if that was common at 11w.  I hope everything is ok...

  • I don't have an at home dopplar but I was just at the doc the other day and she had trouble finding the hb...they ended up doing an ultrasound and there was baby jumping and waving.  Then she tried to find it again and found it right away.  She said it's really common.  I heard that's why they discourage at home dopplars because they can really freak you out.  Plus you are really, really early.  I wouldn't worry and maybe try again tomorrow.

  • I've been having troubel lately b/c baby moves around so much.  I think you're still a bit early to hear it, so don't panic =)

  • This is exactly why we won't be getting one..... I really don't want to scare myself stupid if I can't find the h/b.

  • 11w is WAY too early to expect to find it every time- most docs can't even find it that early - so stop worrying.

even at 17w i had a hard time finding either of the twins one day - it took forever- and finally we found them both- but i came close to giving up and calling the doc in the am to go in for an US!

    again-11w is WAY too early.

  • Yes, you are SO early so really don't get worried.  My doc could only find it at 11 wks on the super duper one in the office.  A few weeks ago we tried to find the heartbeat immediately after I got home from an a doctor's appt and we couldn't find it, but found it the next day.  Your baby is so tiny at this point that it can be in so many posiitons where you won't find it...if you're worried ask your doc if you can go into the office for them to find it...
