2nd Trimester

Is anyone else paying for an ultrasound?

I was looking the paper the gave me about the ultrasound and how much water I need to drink. It didn't say anything about bringing a VHS tape to record the ultrasound. With DS it said I could bring one but that was a different doctor. I called the office and they said that I would just get pictures, no video. I don't know why that bothered me so much but it did. I found a place close by that will do a 2D with a 5-10min DVD, 6photos, and gender determination for $110. Is this a good price? Do doctors offices record the ultrasound or was my last one the exception?

Re: Is anyone else paying for an ultrasound?

  • I've never had an u/s recorded. I've been to a place that does gender scans and it was nice. BUT, there was no sound on the u/s disc so it was kind of strange to watch just the images of the baby.

  • Nope...just got pics.
  • I'm going to pay about $180 for a 3D ultrasound that is 20-25 minutes on a DVD, about 8 printed pictures and the other images on a CD to print on our own... also gender determination. My regular doctor doesn't do 3D/4D images or record the ultrasound that's why I'm also having an elective one. I also compared lots of packages and prices to make sure I was getting the best deal... though the one I ended up choosing is in Plano we'll just make a day of it and pick up the crib that's also near Dallas.

  • If you have a cell phone with video, you can record it and then download windows movie maker for free and make your own video. ?That's what I did, and I was able to add nice music for the background.
  • I wouldn't pay $110 for a 2D u/s when thats exactly what the doctor does and you will get pictures from that and your insurance will cover it. Also, a lot of places that do 3D u/s's will give you a dvd and pictures and gender determination for about that same price.

  • My ob will be giving me a DVD of it. I thought that was kind of cool. I was thinking about paying to get a 3D but I'm not sure yet.

  • Why pay for something the FDA warns against? Just my .02.

ETA: I feel like the baby will be here soon enough and I'll get to watch her moving around all I want then! Won't she be much cuter once she's in your arms? :)

I appreciate this comment. I don't know if folks just don't know that there is an associated risk with unnecessary 3-D ultrasounds or if they just don't care. It just surprises me the risks some women are willing to take. I know it is each person's decision, but I am willing to be patient or go without a video rather than do an elective 3-D ultrasound if there is even a chance it is safer for my baby.

  • we were told that we could bring a cd and get our pics put on it or pay $5.00 for one. We ended up getting like 3 30sec videos of her moving around.
  • My dr does 3D/4D u/s in the office but I think you have to pay extra. $110 seems like a lot for a 2D u/s. One of my friends who got a 3D covered on her insurance gave me a coupon for a $99 4D u/s. So, if we decide to do it, I'll use that.

  • During my last pregnancy, I had to see a high risk ultrasound doctor and it was recorded (VHS). With this pregnancy, I had the regular ultrasounds at my doctor, and they are not recorded - just pictures. However, I was sent back to the high risk doctor again for 2 ultrasounds, and they no longer record them due to insurance purposes. But they still give nice big pictures. Incidentally, I do not have maternity insurance, so I am self-paying. And if there was no medical necessity to get the 2 high-resolution scans, I would have gladly kept the $300 a pop for each ultrasound.
