keep sleeping on my back... pillow suggestions?

I wake up multiple times in the middle of the night because I've been sleeping on my back, constantly! Hub will even wake me up when he finds me on my back.  Sweet, but I'm losing sleep here, and although I'm not sure of the risks I don't want to do anything potentially harmful to the baby.  I'm sure you all understand.

So, any comfy pillow suggestions? And preferably ones that aren't too ginormous?

Re: keep sleeping on my back... pillow suggestions?

  • I'd recommend the snoogle, but it is pretty ginormous.

  • This early, you are still fine. Your body will tell you when its not good for you anymore!! But if you are worried, there are these little wedge pillows at BRU you can use to keep yourself somewhat on  your side!

  • that's good to know because it seems sleeping on my back is much more comfortable than sleeping on my side...

thanks for the suggestions!  I'll take more if y'all are willing to share :)

I have to agree- I was so uncomfortable sleeping during my first pregnancy but I was convinced that the snoogle would take up too much room in our double bed.  Well, DH gave me one for Christmas and it has changed my life!  I am so much more well rested- the size doesn't bother me at all either. I really really love my snoogle!

  • my favorite preggo book so far is by Dr. Barbara Luke, and there's one chapter where she illustrates a bunch of different sleeping positions for pg women... i've been using the one where you kind of stack pillows behind you and under your back, and two more under your knees or feet.you're propped up on an incline, it's kind of like sleeping in a reclining chair. that way you are still on your "back", but you aren't lying flat and therefore aren't restricting blood circulation. the risks of lying flat on your back are that the weight of your uterus puts pressure on the vena cava (major artery leading to your heart) and you don't get adequate circulation therefore babies aren't getting maximum blood flow either. i think its more dangerous for you than it is for the baby, but if you like sleeping on your back i'd try my above suggestion, i can sleep comfortably through the night that way and i've got twins in here!
  • My hips have been hurting so bad when I sleep on my sides, that I just turn on my back!  I figure my body will let me know when it's no longer a good idea to do so!  So sleep however feels comfy!!!
  • Honestly, sleeping on your back right now is okay, its a little futher down the road when your uterus starts putting weight on your major vessel...Im 24 weeks and I will probably do it for a little longer.....

  • every dr. is different, but I asked my dr. about this on Tuesday and he said that it did not matter if I l slept on my head as long as I am comfortable.  You may check with your dr. about sleeping postions.
  • Ditto pp that you don't need to push yourself to sleep on your side if you're comfortable on your back. As my prenatal yoga teacher pointed out - the recommendation is pretty new, and somehow human kind has made it this long. Wink

That said, I get horrible backaches when I sleep on my side, but I couldn't break the habit. I found two helpful pillow placements that kept me on my side. (1) Put a pillow behind your back. Even if you roll over, you'll be at an angle. (2) Put a body pillow diagonally through your legs, so that one end is behind your ankle/calfs, the middle is between your knees, and the other end is in front of you belly. I found this propped me up. Plus, putting a pillow between your legs prevents/helps hip pain that some people have laying on their side. You could probaby use a regular pillow between your knees and sticking out the back.
