alternative to epidural

I had a bad experience with receiving my epidural with my ds and I am really hesitant with getting one this time. ?I won't freak anyone out with details, but it was extremely painful. ?I will talk with doc about alternatives, but was wondering what the board may know about another good option.

Re: alternative to epidural

  • Read Dr. Bradley's book "Husband Coached Childbirth".

There's also hypnobirthing, but I haven't heard many opinions on that one either way.

    Good luck! I am also anti-epidural. :)

  • I'm wondering if having an epidural is similar to the pain of a spinal tap?

  • I'm going to be at home, so I don't have the option.  I am seeing a hypnotherapist and using an at-home class.
  • I'm working with an acupuncturist that specializes in acupuncture during labor to manage pain. So far my sessions have been wonderful and I'm pretty sure it will help when the big day comes!
  • Check out Hypnobabies.com and my birth story...good luck with whatever you choose!

  • our birthing center calls the whirpool the 'liquid epidural'  If you want to avoid the epi, you might look into the natural/midwife route.

I had an epi with my first.  I wanted to avoid it to begin with, but that's another story.  Anyway...it wasn't pretty.  It wasn't awful, but I never want to have one again.  THere are some other things they can give you like nubain, etc. but i hear they pretty much make you loopy without taking the pain away.

  • The only other thing I've heard of is Demerol.  Though, I've heard it can just make you loopy and not really take much pain away...
