WWYD - Havn't seen neighbor in a few weeks...

So we're not close or friends with our neighbor really.  If we see her out we say hi or wave but that's the extent of it.  She's a single woman probably in her early 50's.  She has a small dog.  She works full time and occasionally I'll take a UPS package for her when she's not home.

Well I haven't seen her for like 2 weeks.  She is usually outside at some point during the day to let her dog out and she smokes outside also.  I haven't seen her car (though it could be in the garage) or her or the dog.

The strange thing though is that there are other people in the house.  I know she has a son who is in his 20s and I think that is who is in the house with his girlfriend/wife and potentially a baby.  They go outside to smoke as well.  However, this kid is very scary looking and I'm not comfortable going over there and asking about my neighbor.  This is probably bad of me but he has tons of tatoos and piercings and wears all black.  A few years ago we saw him over there and he was in a fight with his mother (my neighbor) and told her that he was going to cut her head off. (He was yelling and we could hear him.)

I know I'm totally jumping to conclusions but I can't help but think maybe he did something to his mother and now he and his girlfriend are living in the house.  I feel stupid calling the cops about it but something is just not sitting right with me.

call the cops and tell them exaclty what you wrote... they can look into it. I wouldn't go over there either.

You can call the non-emergency line at your local police/sheriff and tell them the situation and ask that they do a wellness check. I'm sure they'd let you remain anonymous.

This is a little morbid but can you check the obituaries?  Our paper is online and you can search for people a few weeks back. 

I'm just thinking it's possible she died and they are taking care of her stuff. 

Or maybe she's out of town and they are house sitting?

That's what I was going to say. It would worry me, too. Maybe it's something innocent like she's visiting relatives and they're house sitting for her. If it's not, I would feel terrible if I did nothing.

I would probably "make somthing" and have some extra and go over under the guise that I wanted the woman to have it.  I think it is important to look out for your neighbors.  The kid could just be house sitting.

She's most likely on vacation if car and dog are gone.  They're probably just house sitting. 

Yelling fights happen.  Most of my friends are or have been pierced black wearing tattooed freaks, and most are nicer than the "normal" people.  I AM a tattooed, purple haired black wearing freak. 

I'd just go ask, say you noticed they were over there, how's mom doing?

I'd have someone come out and check just for peace of mind if you're not comfortable going over. Or maybe you could send dh over.

I'd go over there and ask about the mom. See what kind of vibe you get from the son. I'm not sure I'd judge him on one overheard comment and his appearance. If he's giving you a creepy vibe, or the mom doesn't come back, then call the police and ask them to do a welfare check.

Are there other neighbors that she actually talks to? They may know whats going on. Maybe something happened to her or maybe she is just on vacation.
