3rd Trimester

Anyone diagnosed with having only 1 artery in umbilical cord?

I just had this told to me today at the ultrasound.  The ultrasound tech alluded to the fact that everything else looked fine, but I'm going to call the drs office tomorrow and see if they got the results back from the radiologist.  After reading things on the internet I'm a little freaked out...  This will be my third child...

Re: Anyone diagnosed with having only 1 artery in umbilical cord?

  • Yep.Do Not google it. I found some scarrrrrrryyy stuff and my doctor didn't mention any of the things that I read.. Basically the growth of your baby will need to be more closely monitored. I go for level 2 ultrasounds every 3-4 weeks. Having the single vessel umbilical cord also increases the risk of downs, etc. So they check for all the soft markers of that. In my case, my risks of downs are so low and there were zero soft markers so that is not even a thought in my doctor's mind..

  • I had a friend that did, and the baby came out fine, fully developed, and even a good weight.  It depends on how well functioning the one artery is.

  • no but I do have a velamentous cord which is where it is exposed and not protected all the way by the whartons jelly, so it can rupture and such. JUST DONT GOOGLE IT!!!! to much out there just go with what dr tells you.

  • Yupp, me too. I agree with everyone else, don't google it. My Dr said that after the heart and kidneys are looked at and they are fine then they only monitor the growth. Just means more chances to see DD on the ultrasounds.
