3rd Trimester

S/O internals

Why do they hurt some people.  I thought they were just supposed to feel like your regular annual visit to the gyno, am I wrong?

I know they don't hurt everyone but if it hurt you (I'm looking at you excited) what do they do that makes it hurt?

I'm getting skerrrrd Indifferent

Re: S/O internals

  • Honestly, that's all mine felt like. They haven't hurt at all. I was starting to wonder if maybe my dr was doing it wrong with all these girls saying theirs hurt.

  • I haven't had an internal yet, but I do remember my doctor using a speculum early on.  I made a comment about it being more uncomfortable than normal and she said it only would get worse.  I'm guessing it has something to do with that...

  • i would describe it more as just really uncomfortable.  my dr always pushed down on the top of my belly and reached really far up there.  DH was always freaked out about how far her hand was.

  • For me, my OB was REALLY far reaching up there and possibly not knowing how it would feel you might tense up which doesn't help. It wasn't too painful for me, more uncomfortable.

  • mine never hurt they were just uncomfortable.
  • Mine felt just like a pap.
  • Sometimes they hurt sometimes they don't.  For me it depends on if I'm swollen that day or not.

The L&D nurse had an easier touch than my OB did.  I'd rather her do mine any day.

  • Thanks girls.  I'll just have to wait and see what mine will be like.  I know my gyno one is uncomfortable but not painful so I'll keep my fingers crossed!

  • I didn't really notice any increased pain or discomfort from just an annual visit.  I did have a little bleeding afterward though.
  • My yearly annuals are uncomfortable but by no means painful. I dunno how to describe it. it just felt like her finger went up there way farther than it should have. Which I guess makes sense. During a normal exam the speculum only goes up so far...for an internal she's got to get her finger all the way up to the cervix - that's pretty far!

Yikes!  Now I see where the major discomfort comes in!  Well at least it wasn't all for nothing if your dialated 1 cm!!

  • I think it depends on the sensitivity of the cervix on that day.  Also, I know there are times when I've tensed up, and I get crampy from that.  If I'm able to relax, they aren't as bad.  And as silly as this sounds, I visualize that I'm lying on the beach, not the table, and think about all of the sights, smells and sounds I'd be experiencing.  It's a good distraction and works wonders.
