Did DC take to solids right away?

We just started DD on rice cereal 3 days ago. The first night was a complete fail, then the next day was much better. But she still doesnt seem to really like it. Sometimes she will open her mouth for it but most of the time she just sits there and looks all confused/not interested.

Is this normal in the beginning? I keep hearing to keep trying everyday but then I read somewhere that if they dont seem interested stop for a few weeks and try again.

Is it possible it has something to do with the texture? I am still making it pretty runny with BM. Should i try and thicken it up just a tad? Could it be that she is just not interested because of the taste of the BM?

Also I always feed her after I have nursed her as per what i've been told to do. Should I maybe try and feed her beofre I nurse so she is more hungry? Although I have read that you always need to offer BM or Formula before eating solids..

UGH im soo confused, I didnt think it would be this confusing. Any insight would be so much appreciated!

Sorry this was so crazy long!

TIA!

  • We've been trying the past couple of weekends and DD does not seem to have much interest in it. Pretty much spits most of it out. I give it to her after I nurse too. I've tried mixing it with warm bm (I thought maybe she didnt' like that it was cold) but she doesn't like that either. I guess it just takes time. She'll only be 5 months on wed so for right now I'm not pushing it.

  • DS didn't really like the rice cereal at first.  I made it really runny like they suggested, but he does better when it's thicker.  Also, the doctor told us we could try bananas or applesauce mixed in.  DS will eat the rice cereal with nothing in it, but when we mixed bananas in with it, he gobbles that stuff up.  He's literally lunging towards the spoon wanting more.

As far as when to feed it- I keep reading differing stories.  We feed him before his bottle just because once he sees his bottle, that's all he wants and he becomes less insterested in the cereal

  • What worked for us was to feed him cereal when he wasn't that hungry and screaming for food.  At first, I don't think he understood that what I was putting in his mouth was food, and once he got the hang of it, if he was too hungry, there was no way I could feed him fast enough.  He was getting very impatient.  Also, oatmeal may go over better than rice cereal

  • I think it's normal.  I tried rice cereal with DS about 3 times before he would even open his mouth for it.  I did thicken the texture just a little on the successful try, so that may help...otherwise it just dribbled out of his mouth before he could close it.

You should nurse her first because you don't want her to get full on cereal and not drink milk.

I had to also go and buy new spoons since he didn't like the spoon I was originally using.  I guess it was too deep and he couldn't get the rice out, so I bought flatter spoons (the gerber ones).

  • He wasn't a huge fan at first, but each attempt has been significantly better than the previous one.  Our pedi actually recommended that we wait a couple of days in between if he wasn't liking it.  I found that if I put a little bit on my finger and let him suck on it that got him used to the flavor/texture.  Then I introduced the spoon.  Seemed to work well.  He's tried it a handful of times now and the last time he ate all that I had mixed up (prob about a Tablespoon).  We also do it in between regular bottle feedings so that he isn't too hungry or full.
