Babies: 0 - 3 Months

did anyone not 'just know' when you were in labor?

everyone keeps telling me, 'oh, you'll just know!'  but i'm worried that i won't.

anyone actually have contractions and not know they were real ones?  i feel like i'm so focused on anything being a BH contx that i'm afraid i'll just write it off as that.

  • I was confused at first.  Since the pain I had was below the belly button and in my lower back.  DH kept saying, you aren't in labor.  That was around 7-8pm on Friday.  It got worse and by 11pm I was timing them and they were 2-3 mins appart we went to the hospital at 2am and I was 4 cm dilated 100% effaced.  This was major progress since the day before this I went in for my 39 week appt and had an internal and wasn't even dilated OR effaced.  I had my son 3:25 pm Saturday.

  • I did.  I woke up with contax that went into my back and I never had BH contrax my whole pregnancy.  I started timing right away and she was born 18 hours later.  My birth story is in my blog link in siggy if interested.  I was 38 weeks.  GL!

  • I never went into labor- I had to be induced but I had the same fear. I never felt crap though so it wasn't an issue. I was slightly crampy but nothing timetable at all.  When I had induced contractions it was much more noticable and hurt like freaking hell- there is no way you will mistake real contractions, trust me!!! It's like period cramps x 1,000!!!
  • I was having contractions from 27 weeks so I never really knew.  The week before I had her I went to L&D because they were every 2 minutes resting and they sent me home.  They calmed down and spaced out but continued.  When they kept me I was having them every 3-4 min and was 3cm 75%.  I felt like I was in labor for weeks. :(
  • I thought they were constipation pains at first and kept going to the bathroom....it took about 2 hours before I realized they were contractions
  • I totally did not know I was in labor the first time.  I went into PTL @ 33 weeks, mentioned it at a routine doctor appointment.  She did an internal and then an u/s and my cervix was thinning quick.  I never would have known.

When I really had him, I had contractions sporadically for two days before my water broke while I was getting ready for work.  I had a feeling I was getting close to going into labor, but still not sure when - especially with the PTL and BH.  I will say that my contractions only got painful when I was dilated 3-4 cm.

  • I never had bh so when I did have contractions I knew I was going to go into labor soon. I started having contractions 10 minutes apart on a Sunday morning to the early afternoon then they stopped. I thought I was in the clear for that day and at about 3pm my water broke and the contractions became 3 minutes apart.
  • I went to the hospital with chest pains, well it was severe toxemia and hypertension but they put me on a moniter and sure enough I was also haveing contractions and was dialated. They had to induce me due to the hypertension but I seriously was not even in pain until 15 minutes before I had to push. If I wasn't induced I worry that I wouldn't have made it to the hospital on time.
  • I didn't know at first and thought I was having bad gas pains. Finally I figured out I was in labor but figured I wasn't too far along because my water hadn't broken. But I was waaaay farther along then I thought...and my DS was delivered 45 minutes after I arrived at the hospital. Piece of advice: don't let the nurses poo poo you and have you think you are just a neurotic first time mom. If you think you are in labor--go to the hospital.
