After dealing with the cough that will not give up for the last 8 weeks or so, my DS is on a 5 day course of prednisone after yet another pedi appointment on Friday. Each time we've gone in, his lungs have sounded fine, no wheezing was heard and they diagnosed it as just another cold.
This time he was wheezing so they gave him a breathing treatment in the office which alleviated the wheezing, indicating no infection, so the doc wanted to try the steroid before giving us breathing treatments at home.
We are on day two and my sweet, affectioniate, lovable son has become the devil child. I don't think I can take 3 more days of this. Yesterday we gave him the medecine at around 3 and bedtime was a nightmare. Today we gave it to him around 11 and he was a wild child all afternoon. So it seems like the worst effect is about 4-5 hours after he gets the med.
What timing would work better? If I give it to him right before bed is he going to wake up like a crazy man in the middle of the night? Is it a losing battle no matter what the timing? Help please.
Three more days, only three more days.

When I've had to take it, I have been
a) unable to sleep
b) hot and sweaty
c) moody, irritable, and basically b**chy
yes, this is what happens when kids are on that. it's terrible. Try something closer to 5pm if you can. that's what we did. You can do it! It is well worth it. ask for albuterol or preventol HFA if cough doesn't go away. they work wonders.
good luck!
Ugh we've had to give it to DS for his wheezy allergy issues. We have to use it from time to time. It turns him into a completely different child. He's totally aggressive. We talked to pedi about it and she said if we need to use it again, they can lower the dose. I hate the side effects, but it does help him a lot.
dd was on extremely high doses of prednisone for about 4 mths when she was an infant. It definitely makes them irritable and yucky feeling.
Sorry your dc is having to take it. It's not a fun drug, but it definitely works.
