Michael Phelps - Detailed Punishment

So the Mikester's been suspended from competition for three months, lost his monthly $1750 allowance and lost his big ole' sponsor Kellogg - and may not be able to swim in the 2012 games.

And where have I been?  I didn't know he got a DUI in 2004?!

I'm seriously disappointed in him.  :)

Re: Michael Phelps - Detailed Punishment

  • He actually got 2 within a few months of each other... I think the first one got dropped for some reason - don't really remember, but I know he spent 2 nights in jail for 2 seperate DUIs within a few months of each other.
  • Loading the player...
  • WTF?! this is ridiculous...he earned those medals fair and square as far as we know....clearly no amount of smoking pot is going to enhance his abilities (although sometimes we think they do)...that's just plain ol' stupid...he should still be able to swim...we elect presidents who have done worse
  • Good lord. Everybody makes mistakes. It's not like he's out promoting, "hey kids, drive drunk or smoke pot." I think they over-reacted.
  • Personally I think he should've gotten harsher punishments for the DUIs... that bothers me more than the weed!  With those he could've killed someone else
  • If I was a sponsor, I would definitely pull my sponsorship, not wanting to associate drugs with my product. I also get it is illegal, but I think people are overreacting. He wasn't using performance enhancing drugs. I bet he will get to compete, the US loves to win.

Eh, I would tend to agree EXCEPT that I think most of us, when offered a kajillion dollar contract from a wholesome image company would probably be able to muster up the self-control to stay away from the bong. Or at the very least ensure that pics of your extra-curriculars didn't show up on the internet, ya know? For several million dollars, I think we could all handle that task. Also, he really put Kellogg's in a tough spot: they may not have wanted to pull the contract, but they are also at risk of alienating their customers if they don't...?

  • This goes to show that sports ability does not equal a perfect role model.

I agree TWO DUIs is unacceptable!  Two DUIs def deserves a few months in jail or house arrest...

But the weed part... I think they are overreacting a bit!

  • while i agree he should be punished, keeping him out of the 2012 olympics- 3.5 yrs from now- is really stupid and does not seem to make sense
