Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Cloth Diapering Plan (Kinda Long...)

Not that it's going to stick, but it is in fact, a plan. :) Please bear with me...

I've been doing all sorts of crazy cloth diaper, disposable, GDiaper, AIO, Pocket, etc reasearch the past two days. I'm gonna tell you my plan, and you can tell me if it sounds good. :) At least....good for a total newbie that isn't actually going to carry out the plan until at least a few months from now...since my baby isn't due until July. I guess I'm getting ahead of myself. But, that's kinda what I do.

Anyways...back to the plan.

Diapers for newborn: The Kissaluvs diaper rental, since baby will outgrow tiny diapers so fast.

Diapers for when baby outgrows Kissaluvs, and we send them back: BumGenius 3.0 One Size AIO's

https://www.bumgenius.com/one-size.php

And for Long trips, Camping, Day's where we plan to be away from home all day, etc: GDiapers, that way I can flush/trash the mess, and have an easier time changing, without carrying around dirty CD's all day/weekend/whatever.

I figure I'll need 24 newborn Diapers(which are included in the rental), 12 or so BG 3.0's, and 3 GDiapers outerpants, and just buy inserts as needed.

Sound good?

Re: Cloth Diapering Plan (Kinda Long...)

  • Just a comment that you might want to do a trial with Jillian's Drawers before you commitment to spending the money on BG.  I thought I'd love them, but found I like other pocket dipes and prefolds/covers better.

  • Ditto PP.  I thought I would love the BG's and they are not my favorites.  I like using prefolds, and contours the best.  Maybe I'll change my mind when DD is mobile and needs a diaper that will really stay put.  But then I think that I will just use more fitteds.  I just don't like stuffing the pockets!!
  • Oh and you may want to reconsider renting the newborn diapers.  I used prefolds and had a few fleece and thirsties type covers.  I LOVE having the small newborn prefolds around.  Now I can use them for burp cloths, wash cloths, OR a doubler in other diapers - then there isn't too much bulk but there is extra absorbency.  HTH!!
  • Sounds good to me. We love our BG 3.0 but mine are pocket not all in one. You will need more than 13 though. I have 17 of them plus prefolds and do laundry every other day.
  • You will need more than 12 BG's unless you plan to do laundry every day.

    Ditto. We love ours!

I would do the diaper trial. I considered the Kissaluv's rental but ended up with orange edge prefolds and covers at the last minute. LOVE those, LOATHE the KL0's that came in the Jillians diaper trial. I would hate to be stuck with all of them for the newborn stage after paying all that money. I cannot even express how much we DON'T like that diaper.

As mentioned above, I would do the trial. We found we like BG's but we also like Happy Heinies a lot. My favorite diaper though is the Blueberry pocket side snap diaper. They are super absorbent and super trim. Keep your eye on Swaddlebees outlet, they go on sale from time to time (I got mine for $9 apiece). Thirsties sized diapers are great too. AIOs are wonderful don't get me wrong, but I like the others too and they last a lot longer than you think.

Last things last, nobody I know who tried Gdiapers liked them. I would go with Seventh Generation or something like that for trips. We actually find that cloth diapers are easier when we are out and about because we don't have to look for somewhere to throw it out, a zippered wetbag keeps them just fine. We went on a trip from NY to MN and had no reliable laundry so we used Pampers for that trip.

Dang this is long, but PS, cloth wipes are awesome, and I cannot recommend them highly enough.

  • We used KLOs with Thirsties covers for the newborn stage (actually still using them) and loved them.  Never had a single blowout or pee leak.  We also used some orange edge prefolds from www.greenmountaindiapers.com with prorap covers.  They worked fine, but I liked the KLOs better.  Like pp said, we still use our prefolds for burp rags and to place on the changing pad.

We started using BG 3.0 (one-size pockets) when DD was about 5 weeks old.  We had a few pee leaks in the beginning when she was still rather small for them, but nothing too bad.  I LOVE my BGs.  I like the pockets better than AIO because they dry faster and I can stuff extra inserts (like hemp) into them for overnight.

    GL with your research!!
