Introducing a bottle to DD. Any suggestions?

For the past week we've been trying to get DD to take a bottle, yet she has refused every time. We've been using the Nuk nipples as recommended by our LC but she has no interest in them. I didn't think we would have a problem with this since I use a nipple shield and because she took a bottle when she was in the NICU. I should also mention that she will rarely accept a paci too. She only wants the breast. I would like for DH to be able to feed her and she'll be going to the babysitter when I return to work.

  • You may have to buy several different bottles to try.  My children have both done really well with Avent.  But I have friends who had to go through several bottles until they found the right one for their DC.

  • DD would not take the Nuk.  She does well with the Avent.  I think they seem more breast like anyway.  You may have to try a couple types of nipple before you find one DC likes.
  • Are you having DH give it to her?  You may even need to leave the room since if she sees you, she may want the "real deal" instead.  I've also heard to make sure you try when they are showing hunger signs but in a good, low-key mood.
  • DD will only take the Soothie brand. We tried several different kinds before finally finding one that works. She likes the NUK paci, but will not take a NUK bottle - go figure.
  • we went through a few different bottles until I one day I stood in the bottle aisle and opened up a bunch of bottle boxes so I could feel the nipple to see if it was squishy like mine. Dr. Browns were and DS has been drinking out them for 2mos now.

  • Colin only took the Playtex Nurser.  Make sure the milk is warm, also try warming up the nipple.  Colin started taking the bottle when I would walk around with him and give it to him (he refused the bottle from anyone else).  I could only give it to him in areas where I never nursed before too.  Also, I would try every day at the same time for 10 minutes tops.  It took 2 weeks, but he finally started taking it again.

Then he would take it anywhere.  Now he is fighting it again, but is getting used to it.  I am giving it every day, same time because I have to wean day nursing for daycare next month.
