Babies: 0 - 3 Months

those who bf and pump...

how often are you pumping, and when did you start?  my LC recommended pumping after almost every feeding, and i HATE it!  how often do you pump, and how is that working out?  i don't go back to work for 11 weeks.

Re: those who bf and pump...

  • I can't imagine pumping after every feeding.  I try to pump once a day because I just don't have time to sit and pump.  Maybe as my DD settles into more of a routine I'll have more time to pump, but for now I just try to pump once DH gets home from work so he can take care of DD.  I also dont go back to work for another 11 weeks so I have some time yet.
  • I started around 2-3 wks.  I pumped 2-3 times a day. I would always pump an hr after the first am feeding and an hr after he went to bed "for the night." I would sometimes do it once in the afternoon.  I had about 500oz in the freezer when I returned to work at 15wks.
  • I would pump after each feeding for at least a month, maybe a month and a half. Then I would pump 3 times a day. Now I pump after he eats in the morning and before I go to bed at night. Pumping a lot in the beginning really helped me build up my freezer stash (although he doesn't take a bottle so it's just sitting there)

  • I pump after every day feeding. I'm too tired to do it at night. I don't need a big stash though. Just enough to cover a couple classes a week and occasional errands. I also like to have a night bottle, so DH can stay up late and feed DS and I can grab some zzzzzzzzs.
  • I was told not to pump until after DS was 3 weeks old...its all a supply and demand thing until your body regulates. After that I pumped 2-3 times a day until DS reached the 2 month mark, now I only pump 2 times a day while I'm at work. My hours work around the feedings so Praise the Lord I don't have to pump every 3 hours or so! I wouldn't be getting anything done!
